New at Tetrapod Zoology... a very long and picture-heavy review of Tokyo's Ueno Zoo. Shoebills, Giant pandas, cranes, rhinos, echidnas, marsupials and a whole lot more... https://tetzoo.com/blog/2024/9/5/tokyo-ueno-zoo #zoos #Tokyo #animals

@TetZoo Oh, hey, I was just there at the beginning of the summer. Not the greatest zoo because of their space limitations, but there was some interesting landscaping and architecture.Aside from the giant pandas, who are international celebrities, I'd heard of this place in transit-fan circles, because of the unusual system that used to run in parallel to the Aesop Bridge between the halves of the park: Japan's oldest monorail, a shuttle line about 500 meters long. It closed down several years ago and is slated for demolition and replacement with a little train built on amusement-ride technology. When I was there, the unused rails and stations were still standing. In the meantime, there was a road tram service carrying people over the pedestrian bridge.
