We know that people attend #TetZooCon because they hear about it on Facebook, or on Twitter... but what about MASTODON, huh? WHO will attend TetZooCon 2024 because they heard about it via mastodon? Your chance for fame, or notoriety. Tickets and info: https://tetzoo.com/convention

@idoubtit Yeah, big fan of this guy, his work is extraordinary. Have you seen his Flight of the Navigator video? Amazing amount of skilled, hard work.

Currently with first few comments - it would be great to see some more. There are some amazing things to discuss on these lizards. If South Africa is their centre of origin, was it really cool enough in the Oligocene(ish) to drive the evolution of viviparity? What's with the variation in sexual dimorphism in flat lizards (most are dimorphic, others monomorphic)? And is herbivory in small forms (like flat lizards) really 'rule breaking'? #herpetology #reptiles #lizards

@drmambobob @PeterFalkingham @AdamStuartSmith @john @mike I remain baffled how anyone can - at this stage in its development - consider _anything_ about AI-generated text a good thing. For starters, any AI 'technical' text is invariably wrong, or misleading. That goes not just for (e.g.) plesiosaur neck anatomy but even cookery instructions....

@drmambobob @PeterFalkingham @AdamStuartSmith @john @mike What about the trite functions like answering emails and such? A huge number of people with 'keyboard adjacent' jobs are overworked; too much is already expected of them. Thanks to AI, there's now pressure to be EVEN more productive, because AI is supposedly doing the jobs that you can't make time for yourself...

@drmambobob @PeterFalkingham @AdamStuartSmith @john @mike I say bs to this. If YOU can't make time for it, that's because you're already overworked. The idea that AI can help us do MORE is going to take us to a bad place. I note that the only people defending the use of AI are techy weirdos.

I'm in Tokyo and not checking mastodon on regular occasion, but my god it's great here. We went to see Mount Fuji today buuut it was totally obscured by cloud!

We just held the last ever #TetZooCon. A lot went down: it was, I think, the biggest and the best. Huge thanks to everyone who helped make it what it was. Here's a long write-up with lots of pictures.... https://tetzoo.com/blog/2024/10/7/the-last-tetzoocon What's next? Well...

In the past I worked as a tour guide (I've had a LOT of jobs). This year I decided to run my own tour in conjunction with #TetZooCon - we called it #TetZooTour - and I'm pleased to say that it really worked out. Museums, zoos, science sites, natural history. A report.... https://tetzoo.com/blog/2024/10/13/the-inaugural-2024-tetzootour

@llewelly @mrundkvist @idoubtit I'm just not seeing enough interaction here to make it worthwhile, alas. Only dropping in occasionally. ANYWAY... 'abominable snowman' is a translation error for a term supposedly used by Sherpas in 1921 (''metoh-kangmi'). Journalist Henry Newman published the 'abominable snowman' term knowing that it was very sensational, and ''metoh-kangmi' is actually two words, one meaning 'man-bear' and one 'snow-man'.

Two papers were (as far as I can tell) accepted for publication yesterday. One is on contrarianism in science, one on an assemblage of Wealden theropods. Fingers crossed, and more news as I have it.

I'm here, but only occasionally. So... #TetZooCon is no more: 2024 was our last one. But hello #DinoConUK, starting August 2025. We're at Exeter University in August 2025 for two days involving stalls, merch, stands, displays, quizzes, talks and more relevant to #dinosaurs and related things. You can already register interest and book accommodation.... https://www.dinocon.co.uk/

Oh hey, I did an article recently on leiosaurids, a group of South American lizards that most people have never heard of. It only has three comments so far, two of which are from me. Next August (weekend of 16th-17th 2025), the very first #DinoConUK kicks off in Exeter, UK. It's a descendant of #TetZooCon but way bigger, and this first one is very much dinosaur-focused. We're very excited about it and hope that you'll join us. Info and booking for accommodation is online at .... https://www.dinocon.co.uk/
