@nightdream It hits all the right notes IMO. Not the keycaps I'd choose, but that one is easy to fix. (I'd get a set of ceramic caps... I mean if we are going all out. )

@futurebird Oh! My wife has this exact keyboard! She really likes it! I think it's a different model because it has more buttons by the thumb, but I think it's the same people because it's got the same jitter on the EDC row.…Whenever I have to do something on her computer it is a NIGHTMARE trying to figure out where things like the enter and backslash keys are >_>Sometimes I'll just copy and paste a symbol from elsewhere rather than trying to find the key

@futurebird Back in the 80s, my wife learned to use a thing called "The Write Hander." a hemisphere on which you rested your palm and draped fingers over seven or so keys on the far side. With this, you could type text with one hand in the form of "cords" that directly generated the full ASCII text set . Mostly your fingers stayed on the same keys, and your thumb toggled a couple of different keys. That's what always comes to mind for me when somebody says "keyball."

@futurebird — that’s pretty amazing. I wonder if I could map it similarly to my Moonlander, so I’d have something ergonomically friendly with a pointer device when I’m working away from my desk …

@futurebird @mcc There is a part of me that wants this keyboard badly. Then there is the part of me that knows that it would turn me into some unholy mix of Mustapha Mond from Brave New World, the Chief Administrator from David Drake's Redliners, and Dr Claw from Inspector Gadget...and a hefty dose of Miles Vorkosigan especially from The Warrior's Apprentice.I'm just saying, it has the same Sorceror's Apprentice vibes I got first time I made real changes to regulatory laws.

The keyboard holy grail for me is a 60 percent, 60 percent keyboard. That means that everything including the switches and keys are 60 percent of the typical size. So it's smaller and better for little fingers. But also easier to carry around since it'd be so small. And it'd annoy people with large hands which would be amusing. I don't think they make keyboard switches in smaller sizes which seems like a missed opportunity to me.

@futurebird At one point there was a tiny keyboard from a circa-1993 Dauphin palmtop PC at the office where I work. I think it annoyed everyone who tried to type on it, regardless of hand size. http://www.oldcomputers.net/dauphin-dtr-1.html

@futurebird The keyboard on the MNT Pocket Reform *looks* like it's about 60%, and it has mechanical keys... it has an open BOM so maybe you could use the same switches and caps for a standalone keyboard

@futurebird If you were willing to model and 3D print your own keycaps and design your own PCB, you could theoretically use Choc v1 low-profile switches with 14.5x14.5mm keycaps, which would be about 75% of typical size (MX keycaps are 20x20, Choc keycaps are typically 18x17 but often uses MX spacing)

@futurebird I've been fascinated by these split and rearranged keyboards. But I've always wondered how long it would take to get proficient with them. I never got much past 80 wpm in my old typing classes (and stayed near there for jobs), so I fear how long it will take to redo reflexes for anything but a split qwerty.

@futurebird ah ... that is slightly less exciting but makes slightly more sense. Two stripes (just usual stereo) would suffice for serial RX/TX ... technically I guess only TX would even work (just blurt from left to right, no need for excessive handshaking protocol stuff).I do like the idea of SMC/coax though: key->ascii scan code->FM signal->coax->receive->FM demod->ascii code->serial bus->etc. With DC power via coax.
