@aral Good lord. What is it with banks and fundamental security flaws? This is up there with "put your banking app on the same smartphone that has the 2FA app".

@aral …why does an OS where you can pipe from place to place easily require OS-level integration for calling an API? Like what‘s the actual engineering problem here that third-party software couldn‘t solve incredibly easy?

@jeffzugale @nyrath Infrared has inherent resolution limitations. And note that the dazzle camouflage doesn‘t hide the objects… but other relevant details like numbers of weapon mounts, status of sensors, etc…

#writersCoffeeClub 8/27: To what extent does technology impact your story?I seem to have converged on writing speculative fiction spaces where technology is more of an enabler. What is done how speaks a lot about the societies of my characters, and what goals they pursue, and what they value. My writing has a strong undercurrent of "what do you build, why" and so deals less in The One Disruptive Tech whose impact is interrogated. That said, my stories spin a lot around space. So-

-without the availability of spaceflight, starships and related life support capabilities, the stories as such wouldn‘t be told. In the same way, automation and biotech impact the room of the possible in a lot of ways. And #ApeironTerminus has wormholes, whose practical use is entirely hypothetical, creating the setting of the panhuman sphere in the first place. So in that sense, technological capabilities have a lot of impact. And the one AT story that‘s furthest rotates around terraforming.

On the gripping hand again… that means tech paints the medium a little less. There‘s a stronger focus on asthetics and character‘s intentions than the particular mechanisms - I don‘t describe or cleave to particular user interfaces. (Which would be an interesting way to add character or paint the medium.) That decision kind of comes from avoiding excessive, loud worldbuilding writing in the story itself. The people who care can figure out how I imagine the engineering of something work anyway.

@futurebird Using something like this a lot… I really like it. It‘s wonderful to use these. Over hours and hours of continous work (and constantly using the symbols layers) there‘s so much of a difference.

@Remittancegirl @cstross reflection points: I‘ve found that I struggle to take away agency from protagonists. It makes me at times viscerally uncomfortable. I‘m okay with people struggling with their own internal incongruencies. And I‘ve had the sneaking suspicion that this has to do with my own struggles for agency against external circumstances.

@aral "I write software in my work time, a craft with a history that arguably goes back to punch card looms but is more practically dated to the development of assembly language in 1947. Compared to woodworking, software is in its infancy. And if you work in software today, you use a text editor to write source code by hand, using terms that map fairly straightforwardly3 to machine code. You are a “traditional developer” in a craft that is witnessing the arrival of its first power tools." 1/n

@aral the greatest trick AI ever pulled was creating the cultural perception that it would be the „slaving machines“ that kills us, instead of the indifferent wills of the money-men who built the machines… And of course, now they keep recycling the same fears with classism and racism. And so many sci-fi writers have been blatantly uninformed and ignorant Ito these issues throughout.

@futurebird …I‘m throwing this idea back and forth in my head, what coding in the future might also be like that isn‘t working with little lists of commands. Maybe computers are better. On the other hand, the imperative and tool nature of computers doesn‘t go away, so why should this fundamental way of instructing them? Or is that precisely the hangup of expecting a fundamental nature to be exposed, where it isn‘t fundamental?

@aral tbh I am still very split on whether Twitter impacted this election significantly or not. He certainly trashed the *potential* of Twitter as a space for organizing, but anything beyond that might be buying into the criti-hype too much of algorithmic social media as a mind-control machine?
