New blog post! This time I talk how I set up WireGuard and PiHole to create an tracking and advertisement blocking solution that works wherever I go.I can now block ads on my smartphone when using any cellular or Wi-Fi network, wherever I go.And the results are wild, there is so much dirty traffic coming from my smartphone.Take a look and leave some feedback :)https://stfn.pl/blog/46-wireguard-pihole-ad-blocking/#wireguard #pihole #privacy #adblocking #blog #selfhosted #homelab

@Xavier we were promised flying cars, instead we have cars that don't fly, but spy on us.

@stfn Be interesting to benchmark the performance. Something like try speedtest.net with the tunnel up and then down.

@stfn Nice ! I use something similar too.I use #TechnitiumDNS instead of PiHole, but it does a similar job. Now, for bonus points, set up SearxNG and set it as your default search page: https://github.com/searxng/searxng :)

@chewie I will take a look for sure! I've been using Qwant as my search engine, but I'm getting fed up with it

@oh_that_courtney I don't think it would make my difference. With my config, only the DNS queries to through the tunnel, and those are short, very light, and heavily cached on the client's side

@stfn Do you have a cost estimate for the VPS?Also, have you looked at Easy Wireguard? Itโs a UI to streamline the wireguard config.

@stfn nice blog post.I'm using the same parts, but a slightly different setup. I already had Pi-Hope running at home, providing DNS to all devices if they want it or not. ๐Main benefit is ad blocking on the "smart" TV.I didn't want to expose it directly to the internet. As you mention that's not a good idea. I already had a VPS running Wireguard that I could use to bridge my phone or laptop to my home server. Wireguard is a mesh network, but in my case the VPS is a central access point. 1/

@chewie I've been using it as a daily driver for some time now, and the service is having more and more problems, the site being down or searches ending in errors

@stfn I already had all the pieces in place, I just had to figure out the routing and -- I can't remember how I did it. ๐
I'd have to look it up, because it took a few tries and I understood barely anything. But once I had it set up, I could run Wireguard whenever I left the house for ad blocking. And as a bonus I have access to all my non-public services in my homelab just like at home. ๐The final piece is an app called "WG Tunnel" that's available on F-Droid. It auto connects the VPN. ๐ฅณ 2/2

@mforester thanks for sharing! Right now I'm using a two fold solution, wiregaurd for PiHole and Tailscale for reaching my homelab from outside the house. I might combine them at some point ๐

@stfn This is gold; I'm running Pihole at home but never thought of using it for mobile as well. Another project pushed on the stack. ;)
