I've always hated "reality" TV. And for a long time I was silenced... "let people enjoy things" or "don't be so pretentious" etc.Trump has caused all of my questions and objections to return. Why would anyone try to come up in politics as a lawyer or politician when you could be on a reality TV show and be "shaped" into anyone you wanted? "everyone knows it's fake"That's not how the human brain works.

@futurebird Same.Just the thought of being surrounded by cameras & crew, while 'showrunners' contrive to embroil me in conflict & drama, makes me nauseous.I dunno? Maybe it's an introvert thing? Too much empathy? Just quite certain that I'd sooner fuck off into the sea & hope that I grow gills than sign up for one of those shitshows.

@futurebird I always felt the format was also designed to bring out the absolute worst in people. Even some of the 'reality' shows on the Cooking Network get too much into creating conflict for my tastes.

@futurebird I was living in the UK when the first season of Big Brother aired. I hated it from day dot, and could never understand the appeal, beyond it being a live action, faux-local gossip rag. But then I never understood why people were so invested in (mostly manufactured) bullshit about the goings-on of the royal family or random celebrities. It’s frustrating to see this lazy parasocial impulse feeding machine rise to become the bread and butter of a lot of channels.

@futurebird I quit with TV before that became a thing so I don't quite know what it's all about - I get the impression that they are basically gameshows? It makes me feel guilty at this point though, because I've been thinking for years that I *should* watch at least a few episodes of 'Apprentice' just to understand how he was presented and maybe get some idea of who or what his fanbase thinks he is, but I just haven't been able to make myself do it.

@stevenaleach They are game shows that play with people in much more sadistic ways. Mitigated only by the fact that a lot of it is fake and scripted. I can't watch it for long either because I get bored. I just don't feel invested in any of it since if I did I'd feel gross...
