       @jon @jmovs @anildash Yes, a law stating e.g. that tickets need to be sold to all trains servicing a station would make sense. You'd probably need some sort of SLA too, including that the org that oversees the station has to give other orgs access so they can install and service their vending machines. There may still be a risk that Trenitalia stops servicing some SNCF stations, depending on how their contract is written.

       @mjausson @jmovs @anildash If we could manage this for digital ticketing it would be a start. You could also oblige ticket sales at station counters as well, as they could use the unified system.

       @jon @jmovs @anildash I could see selling tickets at the station counter as long as people pay by card. Based on my retail experience, cash would be much harder. That's because you have to count the cash in the drawer, to make sure it balances with what you've sold, at the end of your shift. No doubt the different railways are going to have different requirements. Some may even insist on separate cash drawers. Staff will avoid selling tickets if it means going home 5 minutes later.

       @mjausson i don’t see it as that hard. You’d need a higher % of the sale going to whoever did the selling than you would with an online sale. The financial side would be in the ticket office IT system.

       @jon Do you have any experience working in retail? It doesn't really sound like it. Being responsible for a cash drawer is simultaneously the most tedious and stressful part of working in a retail situation. It's stressful because if there is a discrepancy, you did something wrong. Manually counting the money in the till at the beginning and end of your shift is done to prevent theft. People routinely get fired over missing cash. The stakes are high.

       @mjausson@mastodon.design @jon@gruene.social come on, bus tickets are already being done in this way with a ton of different bus operators. It's fine, there just needs to be a system that can allow selling the tickets for all of them by a single cashier.
