I assumed that a lot of people were killed given the level of news coverage. But, no, this story of "Venezuelan gangs in Colorado" is just about splashing around images like this one of young men who aren't white with big guns.It's presented to white audiences by Fox and Republicans as "migrant gangs" ... both of those words are unconfirmed, assumptions.But this image unlocks a primal fear for many people. A horde of "others" coming for your family, your women.

Most of the targets of such violences are from the same community as the perpetrators. That's how violence works. For example if you are a right wing presidential candidate who is more likely to shoot you?A country of millions will never be violence free so these images can always be found, or manufactured no matter how little crime you have. And the most secure well-armed people in the country can wail for whole communities to be persecuted to sooth their fears.

But, it might get a lot of people's lives ruined along the way as well.A whole community is suffering disproportionally due to the actions of a handful of knuckleheads and Fox news whipping white people into a frenzy with scary videos. @futurebird @sundiesel So THIS is what got my sister (who lives in CO) so riled up. She heard about it on Next Door, which means it's BS and fearmongering. Then she claimed that a sheriff's "posse" in her town is going around to small businesses to warn them and show them how to stay safe. She simply wouldn't believe me when I said it's likely the sheriff bought the BS and formed a citizen "posse". BTW, she lives in the reddest county in CO.

This will work on the same six simple minded guys who were already voting for RFK for some reason and not much else. Wow. Great job. @Bette @sundiesel Nextdoor is a deeply toxic app and I'm not shocked it's being used in these kinds of manipulation campaigns. Hope you'll keep talking to her about it. I can't tell from context if she's white or black but sometimes seeing how "outside" groups are being manipulated can be protective in a way if that makes any sense. These people are trying to play everyone. And they think it'll be easy.

@sundiesel @Bette Ah. Well, this has been blown out of proportion in a way that will be very unhelpful for anyone interested in pragmatic public safety. And that sucks. From what I can tell there is some kind of gang. And like most gangs in ethnic enclaves they are mostly targeting people with less power than themselves from their own community. And the local cops are going nuts with show of force and grabbing all the wrong people and not listening to that same community.

@snork303 @Jackiemauro I really think it's just because they have a little video that's kind of like a scene from a scary home invasion movie... the most boring parts of such a movie. But it pushes those buttons they like to push the most. It's so damn tiresome. And insulting to people in a way too. (If I were white I'd be really offended by what thinking this would work on me would imply about my ability to reason-- I'm offended by proxy in a way though)

She's easily manipulated into believing what she hears, which is very often coming from another old lady who heard it on FB or Nextdoor ...

@futurebird Driving fear is the goal. It is amazing what people are terrified of. And it is all learned behavior. Rarely based on anything real. When I was much younger, California was teaching 5 year olds that they were being abused by satanic daycares. Then it was Dungeons and Dragons that was turning people away from Jesus. These days it is AR 15 rifles killing everyone. Covid vaccines making everyone sterile. Post birth abortions. It's nuts what people buy into.
