I hate when I look something up and it's described as:pyglorb: a simple python wrapper around libglorb. Object oriented scripting access to all the GlorbTech routines. Not compatible with libNoot versions below 2.8.5!And you have no idea what glorb or noot is so this helps not at all

@foone and then you look up libglorb and the "readme" is just the GPL

@foone and your confusion will be echoed by future digital archivists unable to make old software they need run.

@foone the number of times I’ve thought “hey it would be fun to build a thing!” So I look up instructions for building it and they start with “import these libraries” and how’s about we start with what OS youre on, what language you’re using, and whether this is your local computer or something you’re cloud hosting somewhere?

@foone I, for one, welcome Glorb as our new galactic overlord.

@foone libNoot sounds like an overly clever PNG parser.

@foone It's a level 99 artifact, not for the uninitiated. Look up the Glorb of Nootuvox if you don't believe me. [exit, murmuring "Anál nathrach, orth’ bháis’s bethad, do chél dénmha" repeatedly]

@foone be sure to use Noot 2.8.6 though! Else Glorbs won't work.

@foone and it turns out that GlorbTech's "open source" routines are all just autorest wrappers to their SaaS API that is now defunct via acquisition

@foone as long as the rest of documentation is just a list of API functions and their parameters. Using the same descriptive approach:Init(prefs): initialise libGlorb. Use prefs to set global parameters.

@StompyRobot @foone It will work if you use glorbs 6.5.4rc23. "worked on my machine"

@foone @futurebird When I become dictator, all software projects, open source or closed, will, under penalty of death, have a README starting with a simple description of what the hell the software does. My thugs will go house to house, cubicle to cubicle, rounding up those who do not comply.

@foone the rest of the Readme is pip install and a hello world example. (Why can you only call this context manager once? Fuck you, that‘s why.)

@foone I'll see that, and raise you end-user software that documents configuration or input in terms of "any valid Glorblang florble". I'm not a Glorblang programmer, I have no idea what a florble is or what constitutes a valid one. Of course, they never link to authoritative documentation about florbles, either.
