This queen ant is so cute. She’s very shy and has only one daughter (so far)

@futurebird Can a queen raise her own offspring without help?

When you watch insects closely you discover they are mostly just very scared ... because everything is so big. Which is why I think most people who watch insects closely come to like them a lot more. They really are just lil guys and gals trying their best in a big world.

@futurebird Also true for arachnids. The first time I really paid attention to a jumping spider, I couldn't help but see it as a tiny ninja, slinking along, going into a defensive crouch in response to nearby sounds or vibrations, waiting until the threat passed, and then continuing on its mission.I've always looked out for jumping spiders since then.

@futurebird I see a lot of shorts on youtube about bees, and it seems bees live in a chain... The bees raise a queen who replaces an older queen, or raise a new one when the old one dies, who births the next queen... I had assumed ants did roughly the same thing. The idea that a single ant can form a colony is neat.

@futurebird I’m no insect expert like you myrmepropagandist. And I’m also a little afraid of insects. With that being said, in the last decade or so, I always become a little sad when I see them because they are so small…and so afraid of seeing us. I can’t bring myself to hurt the little ones…

@NMBA Carrion beetles are very involved parents for insects. It's a very wholesome little family in a kind of ghoulish context.
