       There's renewed interest in leaving XTwtr. So Im writing a short post on Masto for Newbies, hence the questions Ive asked recently. I think aside from tech/UX howto issues, its the Fediverse concept thats so hard to grasp. That its not one app, one procedure, with the same look and feel, that serves up 'everyone' you can follow, not a Mass Comms platform.        I find rewarding connections and huge amounts of interesting and useful knowledge here. In my alt culture acct I find art, radical ideas. I find what Im looking for, in other words. But Im not looking for throwaway trivia, banal 'fun', cheapness. (I still like cat photos!). I like the amount of control I have, the choices, the interwoven apps and communities.        I like the upfront diversity, the noticeable lack of fear, the championing of all kinds of causes *together*, the big names and the little people communicating in normal voices, the very strong sense of social contract and a kind of dedication to doing good.        So yeah, its probably hard for ppl to grasp when theyve only ever known Xtwtr, or IG. I do feel FB is slightly different bc of its sheer size (and closed group choice) but yes, FB is also toxic and dangerous in public feed contexts. I dont feel its dangerous here in the fedi, it has its faults, sure, but they pale in comparison to the big tech hotbutton chaos.
