There's renewed interest in leaving XTwtr. So Im writing a short post on Masto for Newbies, hence the questions Ive asked recently. I think aside from tech/UX howto issues, its the Fediverse concept thats so hard to grasp. That its not one app, one procedure, with the same look and feel, that serves up 'everyone' you can follow, not a Mass Comms platform. I find rewarding connections and huge amounts of interesting and useful knowledge here. In my alt culture acct I find art, radical ideas. I find what Im looking for, in other words. But Im not looking for throwaway trivia, banal 'fun', cheapness. (I still like cat photos!). I like the amount of control I have, the choices, the interwoven apps and communities. I like the upfront diversity, the noticeable lack of fear, the championing of all kinds of causes *together*, the big names and the little people communicating in normal voices, the very strong sense of social contract and a kind of dedication to doing good. So yeah, its probably hard for ppl to grasp when theyve only ever known Xtwtr, or IG. I do feel FB is slightly different bc of its sheer size (and closed group choice) but yes, FB is also toxic and dangerous in public feed contexts. I dont feel its dangerous here in the fedi, it has its faults, sure, but they pale in comparison to the big tech hotbutton chaos. @thedisciple I'd choose #Mastodon. Because:- it's open, anyone can see all posts, without having to log in. - it is decentralised. No one will ever own all of it. I could host my own. I could host yours. - ppl are more interested in each other. - there is a lot more alternative culture going on.- there is more interaction. More trust. As part of my de-Google efforts I'm investigating file manager scripts for my shared hosting space. Tiny File Manager is a great little script, one php file in the home directory with hash password login, and everything is accessible. Create, edit, view, delete, upload, copy and link to. I was thinking: the US AI industry (aka USAI-Inc) is like a new Empire colonisation. Like the East India Company. Or Belt & Road. Or others. Now its USAI. Many territories and sectors are being extorted and occupied (esp UK & UKHE). Then yesterday I saw that Berkman Klein had the same thought. They even called it a Raj. @tyil hey. So yeah I did a bit of quick digging and it's a fairly popular acronym. Several other uses too. I've seen the Alt Scripting Markup Language one before, but there's others. I think Abstract State Machine Language is the most popular. https://www.abbreviations.com/ASML

@paninid Great thread. Im a brit now living abroad but I echo everything you say mirrored in London (lived there 30+ yrs). Every major large city is this. And they will die (London is dying on its feet) if the young and the lower economic strata aren't supported. It isnt the rich that make a city, its everyone else.
