@jerry man, I really want you to get a camera with view camera movements so you can put the focal plane on a different axis on those last two.

@vathpela I have a tilt shift lens - not sure how it would help though

@jerry so if you use it in more or less exactly not the way Matt Blaze explains (he's not wrong, but he generally talks about using it for technical purposes such as architecture), you can make the focal plane into a leading line, which is an aesthetic I quite like on some artistic shots. You do you though, this is just my thing :)

@jerry ...I want to stress that I think these are great and didn't mean this as some critical slight or anything like that!

@vathpela not at all. After I feed my zoo, I’m going to go try the tilt shift. I’ve been wanting to play with it anyhow.

@jerry though... not entirely unlike how he uses view camera movements here: https://federate.social/@mattblaze/112882439258317569 ; basically the idea is to get the plane of focus onto the verticle or diagonal instead of completely horizontal, so the water droplets become a leading line to the flower in right spot. I dunno which t/s you have, but if it has rotation that'll help a lot. Just an idea :)

@vathpela @jerry adding rotation into the mix of a tilt/shift lens and how it moves the focal plane ... airplane ... yaw/pitch/roll I GET IT NOW

@xabean @vathpela well, I couldn’t figure out how to get the focal plane to be vertical instead of horizontal- need to do some more playing

@jerry @vathpela I have no idea if this works or helps, but this is how I'm visualizing in my head what needs to be done *with the position of the lens* to move the focal plane on the camera's sensor --I just put my hands in front of my face, parallel with palms open facing me, fingertips touching, imagining the center point of my fingertips drawing a straight line to my nose. My nose being the "camera sensor", my hands being an imaginary flat slate of "if I'm looking at this dead-on it will be in focus"If I want the "sight line" to be horizontal, I want everything above and below the center point to be either in front or behind the focal point, so I think the trick is raise my hands up higher, and tilt both thumbs toward my eyebrows. If I want the "sight line" to be vertical, I shift my hands left or right, but send one thumb toward me, and the other away.

@jerry @vathpela I own a grand total of ZERO tilt/shift lenses, but ... I'm guessing at how optics work here and may be WILDLY wrong.

@xabean @jerry I'd be lying if I said I've completely wrapped my head around the scheimpflug principle, but I do like to just get hands on and play around with it.

@vathpela @xabean my camera is pretty nice in that it has a mode where it will shade the in-focus area red in the view finder/display. I found that no matter how I changed the angle or orientation of the camera along with the tilt and shift combination of the lens, the focal plane didn’t change much. I could get it a bit at an angle. I even started doubting the accuracy of the camera’s ability to detect what is in focus and found that it was always accurate. So it is a new challenge for me to figure out.
