@mark @hastur @doktorzjivago I get your point, but I think the person who should get the lion's share of blame is the person making the decisions.

@hrw so weirdly, this is exactly why we wrote sysreport in ~1999, which became sosreport in a misbeguided rewrite for unrealized added extensibility. Hilariously, it included a similar lspci which wound up rebooting every box with the Cypress pci root bridge. Which was basically all Alphas. Including the one kernel IRC was running on.

Who knew, Clarence Thomas's $267k loan from his billionaire friends wasn't really a loan at all, it was just a bribe!https://www.npr.org/2023/10/25/1208600160/new-clarence-thomas-ethics-questions-about-forgiveness-on-luxury-rv-loan

@ahl Most of the systems running them fit in a pocket, of course they only have one user.

You may notice that I sometimes say very boring things about Secure Boot and Linux. Today's no different, and I've been boring over here: https://blog.uncooperative.org/uefi/secure%20boot/linux/shim/2024/05/02/shim-info.html

@foone I have a simple proof of this, but it does not fit into my instance's image size cap.

@bascule 38 years on, and Windows's "Bring Your Own Driver" model is still crashing systems.

@foone personally I haven't done it since I created the last boot/root install floppy for RHEL 3. And even then the actual OS installed from a CD, just the installer ran from the floppies.

@jerry man, I really want you to get a camera with view camera movements so you can put the focal plane on a different axis on those last two.

@jerry so if you use it in more or less exactly not the way Matt Blaze explains (he's not wrong, but he generally talks about using it for technical purposes such as architecture), you can make the focal plane into a leading line, which is an aesthetic I quite like on some artistic shots. You do you though, this is just my thing :)

@jerry ...I want to stress that I think these are great and didn't mean this as some critical slight or anything like that!

@jerry though... not entirely unlike how he uses view camera movements here: https://federate.social/@mattblaze/112882439258317569 ; basically the idea is to get the plane of focus onto the verticle or diagonal instead of completely horizontal, so the water droplets become a leading line to the flower in right spot. I dunno which t/s you have, but if it has rotation that'll help a lot. Just an idea :)

You gotta ask yourself some questions:1) why can this be mounted backwards? Seems like an obvious failure, but not of anyone mentioned in this story.2) what on earth does assembling an M16 wrong (but not so wrong it doesn't work) and firing it into the ocean have to do with commanding a Guided Missile Destroyer?https://m.ai6yr.org/@npr_bot/113080013543898309

@penguin42 I think it probably works as a trivial sight just fine backwards, and you don't need a scope to shoot skeet in burst mode off the deck, so it probably wasn't even worth fixing in terms of actually using it.
