I installed DOS 6.22, Windows 3.11 for Workgroups, patched SVGA drivers, Netscape Communicator 4.08, Video for Windows, and Trumpet Winsock 3.0.and the system hangs permanently when you run Netscape Navigator. ahh, old computers.

@foone My last floppy-based OS install was the OS/2 Warp beta.It took forever to install and worked on the third try. Once running it was great! If it was easier to install I think it might have had a chance.

@foone personally I haven't done it since I created the last boot/root install floppy for RHEL 3. And even then the actual OS installed from a CD, just the installer ran from the floppies.

@foone Eh, I had an S3 card running in 800x600 16-bit colour in those days (running 3.1 at first, later upgraded to 95, a few months after it was released).Even the TVGA card in our 286 (bought in '91) was capable of 800x600, 256 colour mode (or 1024x768, 16-colour interlaced).

@foone I have vague memories of a colleague working up a script to connect Windows PCs to our network via SLIP and Trumpet WINSOCK to enable POP access for Eudora.We ran a terminal server that supported dialup SLIP, PPP, ARAP, and, of course, serial terminals. As I recall, US Robotics modems were the only ones capable of real-world 56k rates, and even that required quite a bit of S-register fiddling. We even acted as the ISP for remote offices.A lot of that was genuinely fun stuff to do.

@foone I came across that earlier on this month actually and remembered that being all over the place back in the day. Didn't they take it out of DOS 6.22? I remember it being in DOS 5 systems I worked on back in the day but when I got DOS 6.22 it wasn't in autoexec.bat.

@foone From my experience as a system administrator: "Normal" people don't even know what a "floppy disk" is anymore. At least people in their 20s... most also don't know what an "Ethernet cable" is, since you can't use this on an iPhone or Android!
