       August 23rd, 1879: The SS Ravenscrag docks at Honolulu. On board were hundreds of emigrating workers from Madeira, including several cabinet makers, and a number of musical instruments such as the machete and machete de rajão. Within a few years these instruments had developed into the Hawaiian 'ukulele, and some of those cabinet makers had established businesses manufacturing them.World musical domination was on the horizon.#History #Hawaii #Ukulele #OnThisDay

       @BigJackBrass Yeah. I got to visit Oahu once because I have relatives there. Actually that's where my parents first met, but that's another story.And it's true: in the city you can't walk the distance of a city block without seeing a ukulele.

       @nyrath It's strange what a relatively modern part of Hawaiian culture it is, but then a lot of what we think of as traditional Hawaiian music isn't very old either and derives from Christian tunes.
