Most people have heard of John Perry Barlow and his Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace. But how many have heard of the Cult of the Dead Cow and the Hacktivismo Declaration?https://web.archive.org/web/20060422152331/http://www.cultdeadcow.com/cDc_files/declaration.html In 2001, 5 years after Barlow's Declaration, cDc called on all hackers to develop software in ways that encode the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the face of the same state-sponsored #censorship and violence that motivated Barlow's digital rights work.(1/3)#cDc #Hacktivismo

Barlow's original claim to fame, before he co-founded EFF (and the Freedom of the Press Foundation), was as a Gateful Dead lyricist. Part of a counterculture that faced years of sometimes-brutal government repression. His now famous Declaration was hastily written in 1996, in response to the events of the day;https://web.archive.org/web/20180210082120/https://alumni.berkeley.edu/california-magazine/march-april-2006-can-we-know-everything/cyberspace-still-anti-sovereign(2/3)

A twisted interpretation of Barlow's Declaration has become been the manifesto of the transnational digital hyper-capitalism we refer to as "Silicon Valley".But cDc's Declaration, drafted with more time for reflection and published with a prelude about its historical context, is more in line with Barlow's true intentions. As indicated by his reflections on his Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace, published 10 years later.(3/3)

Why are Cult of the Dead cow using Discord to host their chat rooms instead of IRC, XMPP or Matrix? Why are there no instructions for using F-Droid to install the Veiled beta app on Android?https://veilid.com/chat/beta/#chat #cDc #Veiled #FDroid

@strypey I disagree that Discord is more tolerable for privacy, but they do have a point in the targeted userbase.

@mondstern @strypey The issue of concern is https://gitlab.com/veilid/veilidchat/-/issues/47 . However, if I recall correctly, F-Droid (main repo) is a bit... technically hostile to Flutter apps (in that they do not frequently update the build tools on F-Droid's server)...

"We decided to not deploy there for this early beta period due to Fdroid’s lack of testing tracks.""We will setup our own Fdroid repository in the near future."https://gitlab.com/veilid/veilidchat/-/issues/47Setting up your own repo *is* the testing track. This makes it available to power users comfortable with adding repos not only on F-Droid, but any app library compatible with those repos.@austin @mondstern

(1/?)@austin> they do have a point in the targeted userbaseThat's generous of you. But this a typical excuse and IMHO a failure of leadership.> I disagree that Discord is more tolerable for privacyDitto. This comment by the Veilid folks just makes me question their motivations/ competence even more.

(2/?)We hear more about FarceBook's privacy violations, because they're bigger and older. But Discord is just as much of a "TOTAL shit show when it comes to privacy", if not more. For a start, Discord is a for-profit corporation part-owned by TenCent, the FB of China. Also, it has all the same underlying technical structures that FB use to violate privacy so flagrantly.#privacy #Discord

(3/3)Discord, just like FB, is a centralised services that enforces the use of proprietary apps. Which can't be audited or modified for the benefit of people using them.It doesn't provide an open API to allow third-party chat apps to be first-class citizens in Discord rooms. It's ToS has rules forbidding reverse-engineering of its internal client-to-server API. A preemptive legal threat against anyone who modifies Free Code chat apps so they can be used in place of proprietary Discord apps.

@austin > they do not frequently update the build tools on F-Droid's serverRight. This has become a problem for other apps in the past, including Snikket;https://snikket.org/blog/fdroid-security-update/I guess that like so many things in software freedom infrastructure projects, there is a shortage of volunteers with the necessary skills, and a lack of funding to pay people to do it.@mondstern

@austin @mondstern @strypey As you've said, "one of the reasons" ;)If you want, you can hop into the #fdroid:f-droid.org room. Other members of the team have more insights about flutter & co and would happily share them with you.

@fdroidorg> If you want, you can hop into the #fdroid:f-droid.org roomThanks for the invite. I note the join message asks me not to edit messages, due to the impact on people connecting via IRC/ XMPP. Is there any way to disable messaging editing in Matrix apps on a per-room basis? Either by the room admin (ideal) or the person joining (so we don't forget).@austin @mondstern
