I've been thinking lately about taking up writing. Not in any serious way; just because I always wanted to, and never really did. But I was just reading 'Rabbit, Run' and thinking "how could anyone ever hope to improve their writing after having read writing this good?" I don't truly believe that it's not worth trying if you'll never be as good as John Updike; my real point is that Rabbit, Run is very good so far. I'm only 55 pages in, but have already been impressed by several passages.

@gordoooo_z Updike is amazing 🤩I'm not even familiar with US realities of that time, but his writing is just so enjoyable!

@m0xee It's my first time reading any Updike at all. Spotted it at Value Village and the title and cover sparked my interest, so it was just one of those sight-unseen things that beckoned my to grab it. I'm very glad I did.

@gemlog True, you can self-publish — you can even small print run of your book, it's not that expensive today. But going the independent route and making it financially viable requires lots of self-promotion, in most cases it means you have to become somewhat of a social-media celebrity — not everyone's cup of tea.@gordoooo_z

@gemlog @gordoooo_z Besides, with big-name publisher — true, you'd get ripped off in the long run, but you might secure the much needed seed money — so you can dedicate more time to honing your writing skill. That's why many amateur writers still go for it.
