This sounds like good news. Customs and MPI are bringing in new border charges from December. For cruise passengers this will mean a rise from $11.50 to $21.50.Naturally the cruise industry is throwing their toys out of the cot and threatening to visit our ports less often. And that, if it happens, would be an excellent result.https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/525441/cruise-ship-companies-that-have-to-wear-a-sudden-fee-rise-will-be-turned-off-coming-to-nz-representative#CruiseShips #NZ

As a business-oriented government would know, you charge what the market will bear. Tourists are paying $2K each for the cruise on top of their thousand dollar flights. Nothing wrong with sliding the cost of a cocktail onto their already gigantic bill. It’s not as though they’d spend it locally. @BobLefridge

I also wonder if it would impact total revenue that Hawai’i brings in. Steam found that halving the price of games double the number of purchases. If Hawai’i doubles the taxes will it halve the tourists, or will it send “pricing signals” that Hawai’i is an exclusive luxury destination?Either way if you’re reducing the number of tourists while retaining the revenue it’s good, right? @keoni @BobLefridge

@futuresprog> Tourists are paying $2K each for the cruise on top of their thousand dollar flights. We all hate cruise ships because rich people, carbon emissions etc. But $2000 a ticket is a return flight to the UK. If that's all a cruise costs, that's actually a pretty good deal. If a cruise ship ran on renewable energy, would we still hate it?> Either way if you’re reducing the number of tourists while retaining the revenue it’s good, right? Is it? For who and why?@keoni @BobLefridge

Comparing against the cost of a flight isn’t a good comparison because their costs are all skewed. It’s a government entity collecting the revenue. By bringing in more money to the government coffers that way they have either more to spend on the country and need to raise less from tax. In this case the people paying the tax are foreigners. This is the famous “bringing money into the country” we have heard about and it’s more efficient because it’s mandatory.@strypey @keoni @BobLefridge

Care to expand on this?> By bringing in more money to the government coffers that way they have either more to spend on the country and need to raise less from tax.
