Homelabbers, let's say you have six HDDs of equal size in your home server. How would you combine them?#HomeLab #nas

@stfn I think it depends on your needs; I would probably go for something like all six HDDs with RAID 10. It offers high read/write speed thanks to RAID 0, redundancy thanks to RAID 1, and it can tolerate the loss of up to 3 disks, one per each pair, without data loss.

@stfn Depends on the context, but RAIDZ1 probably.

@stfn depends on the storage. For active data, stripe+mirrorFor slow big storage, RAIDZ2.

@hydrian thanks! My usecase is reliability over speed, so I'd go with RAIDZ2

@stfn Yes, exactly, and, regardless of the configuration you choose, backup, backup, and more backup.

@stfn Different answers if the intent is, "How would I recommend someone do it?" versus, "How would I do it?" 😉

@rlonstein true, after getting the first replies I realized the question is very vague :)

@stfn depends on how critical the data is on it. Always fun to find new things to try, like bcachefs. Live life on the bleeding edge!

@blotosmetek @rozie that sounds like a very good idea, thanks!
