"Operation Padlock" targets illegal head shops, that are also often bodegas in NYC. Nearly 1000 have been shut down including two in my neighborhood. Frankly, it feels much less safe and dreary with them closed. I don't really care for weed but it was a nice place to get a cold soda. It was open late, made the block feel more safe. The governor and mayor are running around like they are doing something helpful and I'm not impressed?

Weed is legal in NYC, but you need a permit. However that process is all mobbed up and totally corrupt. It's worse than taxi medallions. There do need to be permits I think, but they should be easy to get. Require an inspection every two years. Big fines for allowing minors on the premises. Dassit.

From where I sit is just seems like the few places that have permits have the NYPD closing their competition. I'm not impressed. Can't wait to get rid of this mayor he stinks.

@futurebirdYeah, replacing them with closed stores seems dismal. As tacky as these stores are, they aren’t grim like a closed storefront or even say, another boost mobile 😂

@futurebird Adams does like a good bit of foot shooting in the name of political spectacle but I think a lot of these are coming from neighborhood complaints. One opened up across the street from my kid’s school and the parents immediately circulated a petition to have it shut down. But the empty storefront is definitely a drag on the neighborhood.

@futurebird They’re missing out on tax revenue because they won’t issue more licenses. It’s nice that like Philip Morris wasn’t able to come in and run all these shops, but why can’t they do an accelerated licensing program for the majority of these shops that, by all appearances, are meeting the small business and ethnic diversity requirements intended by the original law.

@ShiitakeToast There is a liquor store adjacent to the school where I teach... I think it's actually the last place a kid would go. But the booze shop is decades old and no one even notices it. So having the stores near schools isn't a concern about kids getting drugs. It's about a perception that, like a night club, it might have "bad people" around. But ... IDK if I buy that.

@ShiitakeToast None of the teachers even like to go into that booze shop. Mostly because you wouldn't want a student to see you do that. But, I guess the locals keep it running. But where I live in the Bronx we are kind of protective of our little shops. Having two closed is a big deal. And we'd just got to the point where there were zero empty shops on the high street.

@futurebird I don’t live in New York. But I should & I love it. Adams has been awful. I can’t wait until he’s not your mayor anymore.

@futurebird Hadn’t thought of it that way. I think the person who started the petition was concerned about children buying gummies. My pothead friends tell me that wouldn’t happen because what kid carries enough cash for expensive weed gummies? And every neighborhood has at least one liquor store where the guys show up at opening time and drink to oblivion on the sidewalk, acting out their dramas. If that’s the one next to the school, it could be a problem.

@ShiitakeToast Chronic drinkers don't tend to hang around such shops in NYC. I don't know why but a bar is a bad thing to have near a school they can be horrible. Shops tend to be quiet and if you know the people there it's a place where you can stop and ask for help.

@futurebird I think most liquor stores here are pretty responsible--the NY license is hard to get. But there are some that attract a certain clientele and I think the NYPD has decided that some of those places are necessary and don’t intervene (I’m thinking of a few particular locations in Brooklyn and the East Village where I spend some time--not drinking though)

@futurebird@danblondell @futurebirdSigns and music or ads on the sidewalk (aka public property)should not be allowed. Do I get to put a sign up or blast ads in a boost mobile store? No. I'd be tossed out, because "private property" why should public property be any different? FTS. it's my sidewalk and I don't see why a business gets to use it rent free, and annoy people in the process.

@futurebird thank you for validating my belief that late night hours for shops make areas safer, not more prone to crime. I sleep better knowing there are people up and lights on than in dark little suburban streets. People think I'm weird.
