I've been working on a few tools to improve the Moderation UI in Mastodon:- Allow searching for reports from a given instance/user: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/31449- Attempting to address the information flow on Report Details page: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/31444For the second one, I'd really love to have a sit down with a UI/UX designer to see what we could do better in this page (there is a lot of data)

Two new rough spots in the Moderation UI that I've just noticed — appeals were added after I was last an active moderator on a Mastodon server, so I've only just noticed these:- No audit log entry when an Appeal is made to an Account Warning: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/31461- Admin and User UIs for viewing Account Warnings / Appeals are merged, making it confusing: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/31460

Designing good moderation tools and making sure they flow and make sense to moderators is actually really quite difficult — there's not that many examples of Moderation UIs out there, since they're typically internal/backoffice tools at big companies. The only other example I've seen has been from Hive AI who offer a "moderation UI” and have screenshots available.Beyond that you're in the land of forum moderation tools and blog comment moderation tools.

Something important to note here is that these are mostly cosmetic changes, many of the "moderation issues” that people raise also relate to ActivityPub or “how data is federated”Those issues are much more complicated to handle, and take a significant amount of time (so I don't often have the funding to work on those)Right now I'm just trying to catch "missing" features or confusing features.

A “missing" feature being something where there should have been a way to do a certain thing, that should've been possible with current federation logic. For instance, missing links between pages, missing abilities to find certain information, etc.So like, for ages we didn't have navigation links to Appeals and Account Warning Presents, even though those features existed, we'd just somehow missed the navigation links for those.
