Can we maybe also stop with bs like: "Greatest country in the world"There is no "greatest" country in the world, every country has issues one way or anotherInstead of acting like everything is wonderful and lying to yourself, recognize the issues in the country and fix them

@stux depends what you mean by greatness. The United States is the probably the most powerful and influential political state to ever exist:https://acoup.blog/2022/07/08/collections-is-the-united-states-exceptional/Nationalists are often talking about that sort of greatness, which is essentially power.

@stux No? Objectively some countries are greater than others therefore there must be a greatest and a worst, and that is not to say that all countries do not have their problems, clearly the ones with more problems than the others are the less great ones. It could be tied and we can argue about the parameters. There might be a subjective element to it when you get past the level of "my country is trying to kill me".

@john Gosh. I forgot about that! Late '22 that bit of writing was frequently shared (by very proud Americans) in a well moderated history subreddit I used to visit.People got really tired explaining how a lot of his cherry picking made for great writing but not for great history. Mostly as the people posting would often come from pro-Trump places and be very argumentative.Mods eventually banned his blog due to the "colorful fact management" not belonging in a history subreddit.@stux

@stux I really dislike nationalistic speech like this, no matter what country it's talking about. It's fine to recognize our collective successes, but we all have so much more work to do.

@Pepijn @stux I’m no expert on this particular question, but historians always complain about chery-picking, especially when talking about very broad topics. Because everything is infinitely complex, and the closer you look, the more complex it gets.I don’t think anyone could seriously argue that the USA hasn’t been an exceptionally powerful force over the last 150 years or so.

@stux ā€œGreatnessā€ in a country is impossible to objectively define, let alone measure, so any ranking is inherently meaningless and is generally a deflective activity.

@john Sure. But that's not what he claims. He claims greatness and labels random facts as great without saying why :-)Stuff like (iirc) "the US is the most tech advanced country to have ever been" (many hegemonies were) and "the US constitution is the oldest" (even if, why don't amendments count, and how is this a great thing) / "the US is the oldest democracy" (my American high school teacher already laughed at that in the 90s).It's probably fun to read for nationalists.@stux
