@strypey might be headed to #Auckland in January through March some time. Might just be Auckland and surrounding as a stepping stone to Vietnam. Everything very unclear at the moment, but I found a good deal. We've been talking about it for ages but never past "seems like a cool place" and we're past that now.Anything we should make sure we do? Anything we should avoid? I'm going through History of Aotearoa New Zealand Podcast - https://feeds.acast.com/public/shows/646b293a1848550012cb049cto attempt to not be too ignorant

@musicman > might be headed to Auckland in January through March some time.Keep me in the loop. I travel a lot in summer, working festivals (highly recommend WOMAD in March, where I got to see Gilberto Gil). But it's always a pleasure to meet fellow fedi veterans in person : )Might just be Auckland and surroundingThat's what @clacke and his family did a couple of summers ago. Might be worth comparing notes with him.

@musicman> Anything we should make sure we do?Waikato is under-rated, esp. HamilTron, city of the future. But being a one-eyed Cantabrian, I don't think you've seen Aotearoa until you've visited the mainland, Te Wai Pounamu. Especially the wild west coast, from the hippy sanctuaries of Motueka and Takaka in the north, to the glaciers and Fiordland in the south.> Anything we should avoid?Auckland (although Waiheke is nice), Blenheim, and Queenstown.@clacke

@strypey thanks! the loop right now is still very unclear. We're going to visit my in-laws in a couple of weeks and I don't think it's likely any decisions will come around. What would be ideal is if we flew through Tokyo or Seoul since we fly direct there... but, those are popular destinations so don't think we are going to get a business class deal. my vote is to plan to wait until next fall to scatter his ashes. the man isn't even dead yet.

I'm going through History of Aotearoa New Zealand Podcast [ . . . ] to attempt to not be too ignorantThe Waikato Museum was showing some great videos about Aotearoa Maori history and the British invasion, and it turned out they were simply episodes of a TV documentary series, which was available on youtube. I'll find it for you.@musicman @strypey

@strypey @musicman We didn't see much of Auckland / Tāmaki Makaurau. Waiheke and the ferry there and back was nice, and we enjoyed the spot with the coastal defense battery, also reachable by ferry, where you could see the downtown skyline across the water. We only spent one night there (or was it two?) before our flight home.We spent most of the rest of our week in Hamilton / Kirikiriroa, except one night in Rotorua where we enjoyed the hot spring bath house, a village with geysers and a guided tour around the lakes with an amphibious bus.

In Kirikiriroa we enjoyed the Waikato Museum downtown, some nice parks along the river, and @strypey 's secret favorite spot in a small forest. The bus ride to Rotorua was enjoyable in itself, the landscape is mostly invasive European grass plains and pine forest, but is coded "beautiful nature" in the Scandinavian mind. 😅@musicman

@clacke @strypey vaguely related to the thread. We have a local indigenous chef that his food truck was called the Sioux Chef. He's been on Top Chef now and is... more famous than I am. in any case, at first it was all local stuff but honestly it wasn't that great but now they have expanded to indigenous foods from... I think basically the Americas and New Zealand but I know they had Maori wines of some sort on their wine list

@musicman @strypey American here who moved to Auckland in 2019. How long will you be here? Auckland is very multicultural, whereas Northland to the north and King Country to the south, by contrast, are more Pakeha (NZ European) and Maori. (Just for relevance as you listen to HANZ). We've visited a bit of both islands so might be able to provide some ideas

@nonlinear @strypey don't know yet. my suspicion is it would be two short overnights but it depends on when we can get flights to Vietnam. it's also possible we'll come independent of Vietnam but I suspect that won't be until after the trip to Vietnam. should know more after we visit the in-laws in a couple weeks

@musicman @strypey If it's just two overnights, it all depends on the timing. Auckland goes to bed pretty early, but you could come into the CBD, walk on the waterfront and get some food. One thing very different from the US is that there are a lot of really good little takeaway restaurants, and fish and chips is fantastic and really cheap. There are good meat pies in every little bakery too.

@musicman @strypey If you're here for a few days, look at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, glow worm caves in King Country, Waiheke island, hiking, Tiritiri Matangi island, black sand beaches west of Auckland.
