       @foone at the university I worked at in the early 2000s, employees would chat with each other with WinPopup over the windows network on campus. It was pretty neat

       @foone funny you say that, but I did a rather popular chat client that used windows 3.1 lan manager broadcast mailslots. Utterly useful but utterly unscalable outside linked broadcast domains.
