@tedu The more I think about this, the more it makes my head hurt.Do you have the commit history for this? I'd be tempted to look if the Windows case had been added later by a different author.

@tedu Wasn't there a time when Macs ended lines with "\r"? I remember writing a readline function that had to cope with all three.

@sjb indeed, classic macos used CR, and it's been quite a while, though still common to see software that handles all three endings.
