"free menstrual products in all public school bathrooms"The personal toiletry obsessed right wingers are trying to throw a fit because the bill doesn't add the extra (and unhelpful) restriction that they can only be placed in womens/girls rooms. It is not "a bill that puts tampons in boys rooms" it's a bill that makes toilet products available for all restrooms. This is kind of like means testing just needless extra hoops that would make it less effective.

What I suspect is the real bone of contention are smaller schools (or schools with smaller buildings) that have unisex bathrooms. Obviously those should get tampons and pads... but I have watch a grown man throw a fit about having to see a white metal box on the wall that says "tampons" in my day--Details of implementation are left up to the schools ... but what the right seems to want is a strict rule so the horrible women-objects must be in the scary women room.

Tampons aren't "women objects" since anyone could use them. But their connection to women and our bodies makes them these... totems of evil for some. (See the genre of comedy where a man has to buy tampons for his sick wife and has a breakdown)

@futurebird I also get the impression Right Wingers do NOT get how periods work (this is why sex ed is important) and do not see the importance of free menstrual products in bathrooms.I mean I'm certain "ew I had to see a box that said TAMPON on it" is part of it, but I also suspect a lot of dipshits think periods are something people with the ability to have them have for shits and giggles

@futurebird My previous employer stocked feminine hygiene products in all the bathrooms.No big deal. We had some trans employees, for whom it probably was a very big (and welcome) deal. I never saw anyone comment on it.

@futurebird The conservative crying about the free tampons is part of the 'politics of resentment' that bigots have always used. They fear 'undeserving' people are getting a better deal than themselves. Those bigots are just a hateful group overall and that's who controls the Republicans at this point in time. If you are worried about the cost of giving out free stuff most people are very particular about the brand, style, etc. of these items, so the free ones aren't used very often *unless* some people can't afford to buy their own. And if that's the case? All the more reason to have them. We've had them at our school for TWO DECADES. It's a little school so they are just in a basket. It gets refilled like twice a year, more often on the middle schools floors.

@futurebird I could see unisex bathrooms being a part of the concern, but I think the bigger part is that if tampons go into a “boys” restroom it supports trans, non-binary kids which they are very against. I see this as a wedge issue in their hate against gender identity.

@sigsegv It totally is. But it's the right that wants to complicate this. The bill is simple and nice "free products for all restrooms" What is the point of writing an essay on who should use what or where? It's being described like it's going to force them on boys.(However, one of the most impressive things during my dating days was when a dude who had a little med kit for our hike had thought to put pads in it. Everyone was impressed with him... anyways.)

@rgegriff In US prisons they nearly always have to pay these outrageous prices for toilet paper. And of course tampons and pads are expensive commissary items. (having a loved one send items is a "contraband risk" so not a solution in many cases.)We once donated this huge pallet of products to a prison and they rejected it. (I think because it cut into their scammy sales.)

@rgegriff We didn't have the energy to fight about it so they went to a women's shelter instead. But, another group had done a survey about what incarcerated women wanted most and we were going down the list getting those items. And getting blocked over and over. They also gave us a hard time about boxes of books. Though when we ordered them through amazon that was fine for some reason. It was SO annoying.

@futurebird Wouldn't it have been lovely, when I was at That Age, to just get the thing out of the basket & use it, instead of having to very conspicuously go to my teacher, whisper to her, and then have to have her pick up kit from the school nurse & escort me to the teacher's bathroom to deploy it.(At least we had effective "health class", so I knew what tf was going on, so there's that, I guess.)

@apophis @sigsegv I'm kind of scared to talk about it too much but this is such a low effort hack for young dudes who want to seem, considerate, mature, awesome. If you have a kit with band aids and such put a pad in there. The girls will gasp and remember it forever in the best possible way. Because the kind of guys who act like girls have cooties are so common and NOT being that ... it's impressive.

@futurebird I rember a first date where my friend asked me to buy tampons for her. In the store I discovered that they came in different sizes, a new world for me. But no big deal, I wasn’t embarrassed. If anyone thought anything I would guess I was buying them for a girlfriend (I wish)
