If you are in the US how much does a half gallon of milk cost where you live?Making this a 4 option poll is giving me a headache. Personally I've been finding the price is all over the place and it's a little wild.

Thinking about how milk used to be a staple that was pretty much the same all over the country. My South Bronx grocery has about 20 variations. And the thing about having lots of different versions of a product is it allows differential pricing. So that each person pays the highest possible price they will tolerate. Hotels and airlines do this to extremes.

@futurebird As a side note, I can't help but to have a pretty strong negative kneejerk to the whole "organic" thing and the reminder that you have to pay more for what is essentially the same thing except possibly more likely to kill you if something goes wrong is just...Sorry, I can't help it.(It particularly bugs me because it uses more resources/worse for environment, costs more, and makes prices overall higher for us all by taking over.)

@nazokiyoubinbou The ultra-pasturized is worth it if you can't drink milk fast enough though.

@futurebird oddly, the price of the same Organic Valley Whole Milk can vary from $4.49 in the local IGA to $6.89 at Safeway, 24 miles away to $8.29 at an Organic Bulk Market a few blocks from the Safeway (Western Washington, Olympic Peninsula, near the Pacific Coast)

@nazokiyoubinbou They tend to be lumped together... despite the 20 different versions. I "end up" with organic often as it's the least expensive ultrapasturized with the best exp date.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou agree on the ultrapasturized though organic or not, that’s the only type available and it’s not good for making yoghurt. About 90 minutes away, I can buy raw milk, but that’s problematic, though I simmer it first for ten minutes before making yoghurt

@jadp @futurebird Makes sense. Pasteurization gets rid of much of what bacteria like. Ultra-pasteurization intentionally gets rid of even more. It's pretty much the exact opposite of culture-ready milk.I'm actually surprised organic pasteurizes at all these days though. They like to lock on to the anti-whatever-everyone-else-is-doing-that-is-better-for-a-reason fads.

@nazokiyoubinbou @jadp My understanding is the "organic" label is about hazy notions about overuse of antibiotics, and animals being treated poorly... (see also "grass fed")It also does little to promise that any of those things are being addressed.

@nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird is this USA by any chance? it's a very interesting take. in many countries it is perhaps differently regulated, and I think there would, as a result of different thinking, be a huge difference to what you describe. interesting to learn more.

@falcennial @futurebird Yeah, USA. Regulation is pretty loose on "organic" and mostly "self regulated" (aka organic companies can sell "certification" to other companies for a nice little logo that people believe is official in some way.) It has different meanings depending on which specific thing it refers to, but it largely means stuff like no GMOs or etc playing on people's lack of understanding of what those are.

@futurebird @falcennial Knee-jerk reaction to ignorance.Things that are scientifically accepted as good are bad because science is bad, so do the opposite. We live in such a strong anti-science time right now that people reject things that were well known even in the medieval ages solely because it is scientifically explained.

@futurebird 0.5gal whole milk is $1.50 at the Target near me (Tempe), Horizon organic is like $4.90 for the cheapest and $6.40 for the most expensive one. There’s whole milk, 2%, 1%.Lactose free versions of the above threeUltra pasteurized versions of the above three. And then organic has above three plus 0%, DHA, grass fed and DHA++.And the Lactose free versions of all organic versions…Honorable mentions go to chocolate milk and strawberry milk and the odd skim milk. This is ridiculous.

@futurebird all of the above, somehow. There are a lot of options! There's the $3 regular old plastic jug variety all the way up to nearly $8 grass fed, organic options. But there are also cheaper organic, ultra pasteurized options.

@futurebird I have no idea, I gave up buying milk years ago because I couldn't find a grocery store that kept it reasonably cold. (I get that there's shelf-stable milk that doesn't need to be kept cold, but I don't care for it.)

@futurebird not in US (in Germany); here, one liter of ultra pasteurized lactose-free cow milk is 1.19 for 1.5% / 1.29 for 3.8%. Ordinary (not lactose-free) UHT cow milk is I think way under one euro. Oat and soy milks are 0.95 or 0.99 depending on the supermarket. But afaik cow milk production is heavily subsidized in the EU.

@futurebird I looked into the origin of the gallon, because I was really expecting it to be based on oil drums.Like "one gallon or a 112th of an standard barrel"But is actually based on British beer, which is arguably worse :)

@jadp They seem to change the prices by the expiration date, which makes sense, but it's made buying milk confusing. And it's harder to compare prices. Once they had a sale and when I rung it up I saw $3.50 and thought "that's too low... it must be the older milk" (it wasn't) Even though that used to be a reasonable price.

@futurebird Here in Charlottesville VA, USA, it looks like typical grocery store prices are $2.50 for a half gallon of regular whole milk and $4 for organic. We buy milk in glass containers from a local-ish company, and it's more expensive ($5.50+$3 deposit). We started buying this after our son was born, out of concern about growth hormones, etc., in mass-produced milk. We've kept it up because of the glass bottles, and to help support smaller local businesses.https://www.homesteadcreameryinc.com/our-values/

@futurebird I wonder why is it so much cheaper here then! (Since it is, like, $1.5 per half-gallon of ordinary ultra-pasteurized cow / $2 per half-gallon of soy or oat / $2.5 per half-gallon of lactose-free ultra-pasteurized full-fat cow, unless I messed up with units conversion... which is significantly below the lowest option in your poll. And it's even cheaper than that in some other European countries like Spain!)

@futurebird Back in the ‘50s, we had a milkman who delivered: we had a little insulated cooler on the front porch, and a few times a week we would get a few quart bottles in the morning.
