So I've got this device that says the usual "Warranty void if seal broken" nonsense, and it's like... why did you put this sticker on here? These haven't been legal in the US (where this thing was made and used) since 1975.

But here's the real thing: This sticker right next to that one says that this thing is not for sale, it's a prototype, for internal use only, no one outside of google should even SEE this thing. SO WHAT FUCKING WARRANTY ARE WE VOIDING HERE?

@foone It still brings some joy (at least to me) to freeze-remove or solve them chemically with some careful diligence and smugly transfer them back unharmed.

@foone I still see shaving cream and hairspray containers that promise to be CFC free, like they’ve been legally required to be for decades.

@foone probably the usual reasons, to keep the curious consumer from poking things with screwdrivers...

yeah I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to have this but that's a completely separate problem from the warranty issue

@foone It's one of those stupid things where it's not a law that's really enforced so companies continue to get away with it. After all, why would they put it there if it's not illegal?

@foone My guess is that they could just be "Evidence of Tampering" at this point

@foone "not for sale or distribution (except to Foone) and has not been tested for" etc.

@foone The only time this sticker applies is when you trade a seal for warranty.

@foone This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not a device of honor. No good technologies were implemented here. What is in this device is dangerous and repulsive to us.

@foone Much like 'trespassers will be prosecuted' or 'having no payment method for your petrol will result in the police being called' signs. Looks good, but is just a load of ignorant rubbish.

@foonePerhaps the base device is something commercially available which Google bought and modified in some fashion to make it their "own device" and the warranty sticker was left from that first purchase? I ran across this years ago installing certain Google devices into customer racks in a data center -- which was exceptionally funny to me because we had the base device already in the next rack over which was identical without the silkscreen Google logo on the front.

@sonick_rnd this isn't even in the top 10 of most-SCP objects I've got in my house/storage unit!like I've got that nameless VR helmet which might be for mind control, a bunch of mysterious DIY electronics boxes with vaguely named buttons, plenty of stuff that appears to have fallen in from an alternate universe because there's zero hits on google for it, the list goes on and on
