The problem with being a programmer with ADHD is that it's often more fun to build a chainsaw from scratch than it is to chop down a tree by hand with an axe.

@foone Me trying to get a set of information for family tree, using three different genealogy programs *plus* Excel/LibreOffice Calc. Getting the people to match up is SO MUCH a PITA.

@foone Having once used an axe on a large wooden structure (that was partly soft because it was rotten) I think it may actually be less total effort to build a chainsaw.

@foone I don't think I have ADHD but I sure am good at doing all sorts of tasks related to my task without ever doing my task. Also small gas engines are way cooler than flailing an ax about.

@foone the fun bit of “how do I get enough dopamine moving around my brain to function” problem. And what work you actually do to solve that in addition to the technical problem. I like being able to hyper focus, but I hate not being able to go “I’m going to do this now” and actually do it.

@foone That's part of this game engine's origin, all while people were suggesting me to instead learn art and gamemaker, so I could be the next Toby Fox/Concernedape/Zun/whoever. A lot of people also didn't like the fact that I'd rather work in a group since "without monetary incentive to the others, that would be exploitation".

@foone a lot of people don't realize this about ADHD, but over engineering a solution to a "20 minute" one-off task is often a time saving measure because you finish it hours sooner than if you committed to doing it the boring way

@foone I think I have the opposite problem. I am comfortable with the axe and even tough I'd likely get much more trees with one, I don't want to get one. Unless someone gives it to me and instructs me in how to use it. I don't think I can successfully program at all.

@foone @grork Ssssssshhhh I’m almost done with my fuel refinery over here. I’m working on my design for a smelter and I got a great bulk deal on coking coal. This tree isn’t gonna know what hit it. Hell, I’ll probably never have to worry about trees ever again!
