Niche complaint: Pop sci authors should never talk about conferences unless:1) Some explosive new info was revealed2) It's a remembrance of a bygone time that for some reason is poignant or charmingConferences are often boring even for the attendees! They generally don't need to be recounted unless someone got murdered. I feel like longtime profs, used to a captive audience, are especially at risk for this sort of thing. You need to assume your audience's default state is boredom.

Like, the Konigsberg conference where Godel whispered the deepest truth in mathematics and only Von Neumann understood? Tell me that story over and over. The time you went to a conference in San Diego, and the beaches were nice and there was an open bar? No one cares.

@ZachWeinersmith So you don't want to hear about the time folks went to the pub and started talking about who had killed somebody in the Cold War? Got it.

@ZachWeinersmith Selfies with margaritas are ok as long as it's just 1 per speaker.

@ZachWeinersmith I've reported on so many scientific conferences in San Diego and I never once subjected a reader to a description of the surroundings so it's possible to do so.

@ZachWeinersmith Don't people who tell these kind of stories usually assume they're poignant and charming? And isn't everything in the past a bygone time?

@ZachWeinersmith Nitpick: It's “Gödel”. Or “Goedel” if you cannot use the “ö“. Writing the name “Godel“ ist just as wrong as writing it “Gadel”, “Gedel”, “Gidel” or “Gudel”.
