Have you noticed that the entire premise of Pinocchio is impossible because it'd allow you to solve the Halting Problem?

@ZachWeinersmith The halting problem only applies to systems with unbounded state memory, which can never be realized in real-world systems. In this essay I will ...

@ZachWeinersmith Because his nose can determine if something he says is a lie?You know, I never liked the "I can only tell lies" logic puzzles, because I find it more useful to use the word "lie" to mean "intentionally deceptive falsehood."Why don't they say something more like "One of the actors only states falsehoods?"/end pedantry

@ZachWeinersmith Does his nose increase mass when it grows? You could convert growth of wooden nose into an infinite energy source. Provided you find a way to make the wooden dude continiously tell lies.

@Aradayn @ZachWeinersmith A magical being that is omniscient but absolutely malevolent but also very stupid. They think they can fuck with you by always lying.

@ZachWeinersmith AIUI his nose grows under stress, for example when he knows he is lying. That doesn't make him an oracle, as he can't attest to truth or falsity beyond his knowledge. So no?

@ZachWeinersmith That's only true if you take "lie" to mean "make any false statement," which isn't the common definition. "Lying" typically requires a knowledge component in addition to pure falsehood. If I said "I have eight tortillas in my fridge," but my cat actually ate one, then I haven't lied; I said what I believed, in good faith, to be true, and was simply incorrect due to missing information.

@ZachWeinersmith It took me about half a second to apply my CS degree to that statement, realized you were correct in the abstract, and now I'm going to hate you for a day or so again.

@ZachWeinersmith I thought you meant about making a doll come to life and I found myself wondering what on earth that had to do with the halting problem.

@ZachWeinersmith My interpretation is that his nose only grows if his statement is decidably false, so not halting problem issues. But, he does serve as an infinite source of fuel and fiber, which disrupts the economy and accelerates climate change.

@ZachWeinersmith If I truly think tomatoes are poison and I tell you they're not, am I lying? If so then we always halt when internal-flag is unequal to external-flag, regardless of the real world. If not, then Pinocchio has access to infinite information.'There is no life on Mars!' <checks nose, growing> 'Holy shit!'

@ZachWeinersmith I always got the impression that the nose growing was for *lying* specifically, (i.e., saying something you know or think to be false), not just saying something untrue.
