Can we agree that Trumps says the word "black" as in "Black people" strangely? I think one could do a supercut of him saying "black" as in the color and then "Black" as in people and they would be different words. (He also did this with the word "China"... which he almost hits like someone doing a very racist impression from the 30s)It's pretty blatant isn't it? Because I can be sensitive, and sometimes things jump out at me that others don't really notice.

@futurebird Yes. He says these words in a way that evokes a person daintily picking up a dirty rag held at arm's length, pinched between two fingers. He's a pig (imagine me saying that in the same fashion).

@futurebird that was really obvious to me the other day in that interview. He put a good bit of condescension into his pronunciation. Like drew it out or something.

This is why marginalized groups seem to "change what we are called" every 5 years or so. When people want to call you a slur whatever is acceptable can have a way to migrating into being a slur.I think someone has finally convinced Trump not to say "the Blacks" anymore instead he says "Black population" he can't seem to bring himself to utter the phrase "Black people."In the other direction his rhetoric is degrading the word itself. Languages are living things I suppose.

@futurebird There are credible reports from people who worked closely with him and his father that they used the N-word in the office. That certainly aligns with them having to be court ordered to stop lying to Black couples about there being no vacant apartments for them. And then having to be court ordered a couple of years later to follow the previous order. When he says "Black," it's not the word he's using in his head.

@WearsHats I think we are hearing the irritation of a piggish man being "forced" to use "woke" language. (Such as saying "Black people" not "the Blacks"... and he hasn't even gotten over that one he says "the Black population" which I kind of hate?) I'm certain that people try to give him advice and he finds it all beneath him.So that explains the mocking tone.

@futurebird Yes, exactly. He hates having to be corrected, or not being allowed to just do and say whatever he wants. He gets his news from Breitbart. He hired Steve Bannon to be his closest advisor and even created a new top-level White House position specifically for him. Bannon said his goal as EIC of Breitbart was to make it "The platform for the alt-right." (AKA neo-Nazis.)Having to show a modicum of respect to inferior people chafes at him.

@futurebird When Trevor Noah was still hosting The Daily Show, he regularly hit (and exaggerated) those weird pronunciations when he imitated Trump. If Noah's audience didn't have the ear for those pronunciations before, they definitely learned to hear them.

@StillIRise1963 @futurebird in many ways he seems stuck in the 1970s. I have a book by a reputable historian about the 1970s. It's called the Decade of Nightmares.Trump seems to think America is still there AND acts like a mob boss from that era--blatantly racist and unapologetically sexist. And yes to these words being pronounced awfully. I usually avoid watching/listening to him because of this. See also: Kamala.

@ColesStreetPothole @StillIRise1963 @philip_cardella He was so crabby and pissy through the whole thing. I find it hard to imagine anyone finds that appealing. The whole tone was just... depressing.

@StillIRise1963 @ColesStreetPothole @philip_cardella He really did not need to do very much at all to turn it to his advantage. Simply show a little maturity and gravitas and deflect the questions more deftly. Be less... aggrieved. "everyone is so mean to me"That's not how a leader speaks. They lucked out in a way. These things are nearly always a mistake IMO.

@futurebird Nah it's definitely intentional racism. The use of language is the core of how all outward racism begins. Every racist act of violence is preluded with the language. No exceptions. Language is central to how hate groups work, people need to be more aware of it. It has overt and subversive effects. It's both. There's a similar thing that happens with incel types who spit the word "female". They refer to women as "females", not women, and it's exactly an intentional dehumanization tactic.Monkeys can be female. Pipes can be female. Electrical outlets are female. Female isn't a term specific to people, nor is "population" or simply "Blacks". They understand that. Trump understands it at the core of his being.

@futurebird @StillIRise1963 @philip_cardella It might not expand his poll numbers, but it does invigorate his base. Turnout determines elections, and with his recent setbacks on undecideds due to Harris entering, he has to rely on keeping the ride-or-die team excited.

@ColesStreetPothole @StillIRise1963 @philip_cardella IDK I'm kind of tired of this idea that everything he does is planned and effective. This was a mistake. A big one IMO.We give him too much credit for planning and being a political genius. I think he really thinks he can convince Black people Harris is fooling us and dampen the support. He used to have like 10 percent of black men voting for him (I don't get that... but whatever) but this had evaporated since the switch. He's in trouble.

@futurebird @StillIRise1963 @philip_cardella I agree with a lot of what you said. He's stumbling. Vance was a mistake. He believes in his own abilities to persuade people much like he likes the smell of his own farts. He probably thinks he made a good case (he didn't, and it will further hurt him with swing voters). That said, he did get to be president once, using the playbook of allowing white voters to be their worst selves. He may have lost his edge, but this appearance was from that book.

@futurebird @WearsHats Trump's vocabulary is severely limited. I think it's a cognitive issue (man, woman, person, camera, tv) and it's only getting worse.Trump can speak 200 words, but he speaks forcefully and without hesitation.Biden can speak 40,000 words but he has a stutter and his voice gets raspy after a while. One of these people is qualified to hold public office.

@futurebird I suspect that the performance for the NABJ was more about getting attention for himself and centering himself as being victimized by "nasty women" than anything else. The performance was for his base, he doesn't actually care about convincing Black people en masse I suspect and was more invested in demonizing Black women. Trump's comfortable in this dynamic, he thinks it's good for him (see his debate with Clinton, this seemed like more of the same to me). His base is all about their grievances about not being "respected" (and not being perpetually indulged by women/mommy). @StillIRise1963 @ColesStreetPothole @philip_cardella
