@futurebird That's the same speech the GOP tried to pull with Reagan and the Iran hostages. 'Reagan scared Iran into releasing the hostages'. Only later did we find out there was some back room skulduggery between the GOP and Iran to hold the hostages until Reagan was in office.

@futurebird I have encountered people who believe the prisoner swap happened because Trump is *collapsing* in the election, and therefore Putin game theory'd it and concluded he will not gain anything by holding on to this bargaining chip until February, and instead decided to trade in his bargaining chips now before the situation gets any worse for him.I find *this* argument compelling, but not the JD Vance one you mention.

@futurebird I think I'm willing to consider it plausible! I just… wouldn't *assume* it correct because it involves assuming you understand Putin's interiority and you just can't do that reliably.Anyway, it also seems plausible to me *Vance* believes this exact thing is happening, or *saw people in the press* believing it was happening, and so just reflexively said the opposite thing in public to try to ward it off.
