@zzzeek they are case insensitive. It is very annoying.

Here's a photo I took of a Sedge Wren. Prior to taking this photo I did not know about Sedge Wrens! This little one was bouncing around some tall grasses at dusk.#birds #birding #BirdPhotography #NaturePhotography #Photography

@erickolb @wjmaggos @lrhodes they really won't know what they'll gain until they try it. Many people, myself included, have reported much higher engagement here, despite having much smaller followings compared to Twitter. I've have several posts here get much more popular than my most popular post on Twitter. That said, I'm actually engaged with this platform, and participating in it the ways that it seems designed for, I'm not sure NPR is even interested or willing to do that.

@simon @mhoye You could link to it via elk.zone like so: https://elk.zone/@mhoye@mastodon.social/111335604521769845I know that's weird, but it would at least work

@confluency the "just install linux crowd" are so infuriating. I "just installed" it a few weeks ago, and had to spend at least 30 hours tweaking shit to get a "normal" and usable experience, and there's no way I could have done any of that in the amount of time that I did, without being a huge nerd that used to use Linux full time over a decade ago. It's not viable unless you're someone steeped in this stuff, which most people aren't, and don't have time to be.

@yogthos It may be less energy intensive, but that probably wont lead to less energy being used. Instead a system using this approach would probably just be thrown even more data in a hope to improve the models. Also, in order to really gain the benefit of this technique you need to use *different* hardware, FPGAs instead of GPUs, so operators would have to buy/build more hardware.

@yogthos Yes, and those improvements will lead to "excess capacity" which will just be filled. This won't lead to less resources being used.

@adiz @yogthos A piece of technology created to destroy human lives or ruin the environment probably shouldn't be improved upon. So, yeah, pretty easy to think about a few cases where technology shouldn't be made more efficiently or capable, but go off king.

@adiz @yogthos Here's a piece of technology that shouldn't have its algorithm improved, instead, it should be removed from existence: https://prospect.org/infrastructure/housing/2024-06-18-how-algorithm-turned-apartment-pools-green/

@adiz @yogthos you made a blanket statement about technology, and I gave you an example of bad technology that shouldn't be improved. I didn't specifically mention AI. I'm sorry you don't have very good reading comprehension.

@futurebird Yeah, it's horseshit. They wouldn't do this because they think Trump is coming back. If anything they'd *not* do it so that they can make Biden look worse.
