I was reading the Ars Technica article about subscription mice, and thinking how removed they must be from the long tail of their market - people like my wife.My wife _had_ a nice bluetooth wireless mouse that I supplied her, and she sent it back. "I want a mouse with a wire. I don't want batteries, I don't want recharging, I don't want pairing, please just give me one with a wire".I bought her a $9.99 OEM Logitech, the cheap style Dell packs in with their PC's, and she is happy as a clam.

@ve3qbz Haha, I typical use a specific model of BT mice that I like, and I usually leave them plugged in via USB all the time so I never have to worry about changing them, and actually being wireless is rarely a thing I need.

@croyle I use one of these, with a backup in a drawer. I love how the receiver is as big as a hockey puck and/or another mouse. It also has to be within a few feet of the mouse. But I love the shape of this model; it has been my favourite for decades now.

@ve3qbz @croyle My fave is a Logitech M325. I like smaller mice, a smaller mouse means that I can use both my fingers and wrist to move the cursor. The battery (1 AA) lasts so long that when I have to replace it I can't remember the last time I replaced it. It can be opened up and defluffed. I've had my current one for so long that the color has worn off in a few places, see photo.

@PopeASDF @kilroy_was_here @ve3qbz I had a trackball back in the 90s, also around that time Apple laptops actually came with them. I can definitely see why some people like them, they're just not for me... Like multi-touch trackpads.

@PopeASDF @kilroy_was_here @ve3qbz @croyle Ditto. Especially for the music making station, where desk space is too cramped to be wagging a mouse about. I used to play Quake with one after the normal mouse was giving me carpal syndrome. I’d tune in that sensitivity to be brutally accurate. That was the wired version. Wonder if the wireless has enough discernible lag to make that ineffectual. I suppose I’m installing Quake later!

My job forced a Mac on me. I used the Apple Bluetooth trackpad via USB all the time. I specifically configured Bluetooth off.USB devices are on when connected to a PC? Not Apple's. Need to switch on.One day, riding a train, I tried to use the laptop with built-in trackpad, the other left in the bag.Behaved completely erractically. Unusable. That day, I learned Bluetooth is always on after a Mac reboot. 🤦Apple "knows what I want" 🤮.@Unabart @PopeASDF @kilroy_was_here @ve3qbz @croyle

@dj3ei @Unabart @PopeASDF @kilroy_was_here @ve3qbz. I agree about Apple not always getting things right, but I have no idea where your "need to switch USB on every time with Apple" or "Bluetooth is always on after reboot" experiences are coming from. I have used several Macs daily for almost 40 years now and the things you are saying are completely alien to me.

Apple stuff is user-friendly? Not when I'm the user.Home office. Faraway WiFi router. Lousy connectivity. In the GHz range, a few cm this way or that can make a lot of difference. But I wanted to keep my Apple laptop exactly where it was on my desk.No problem: I found a spot of good WiFi field strength for my iPhone. Connected the two via USB cable. Let the iPhone share its network connectivity with my Apple laptop via that cable.1/2@croyle @Unabart @PopeASDF @kilroy_was_here @ve3qbz

Seemed to work. Connection was now stable. Problem solved.Or so I thought. An hour's video conf later that month's mobile data rate allowance was depleted.Later experiments confirmed: The iPhone doesn't forward WiFi connectivity via USB. Only the mobile data connection is forwarded.I find it hard to imagine a situation where this behavior of Apple's stuff would actually be helpful.2/2@croyle @Unabart @PopeASDF @kilroy_was_here @ve3qbz

@Unabart @dj3ei @croyle @kilroy_was_here @ve3qbz I’ve been quite happy in the Apple ecosystem… my candy coated Unix works well for everything except my ham radio habit, and cheap off lease windows boxes fit right in that niche.

@PopeASDF @dj3ei @croyle @kilroy_was_here @ve3qbz I don’t do much on my work laptop but Outlook and Excel. Though my 10 years with them has got me upgraded to the best laptops they will hand out. There’s a MacBook option, but it doesn’t run the one clutch custom piece of software I need in the field. And they didn’t bite when I suggested virtualization.

@PopeASDF @Unabart @dj3ei @croyle @ve3qbz I never did have the Windows beef that many people have. It does everything 85% of computer users want to do just fine, which is use an office suite, internet browsing, and computer games. An additional 10% might need to do tweaks for software outside of these 3 areas.

@kilroy_was_here @PopeASDF @dj3ei @croyle @ve3qbz Windows is fine. I just don’t like the upkeep and that it’s the prime target of bad actors, adding to the upkeep. I know how to use it inside out after all these years, at a sysadmin level, but am super happy with Ubuntu these days. I need to upgrade my 2016 MacMini as the last OS update fkn crippled it to the point where it’s no longer fun to use.

@Unabart @kilroy_was_here @dj3ei @croyle @ve3qbz my pricing is based on experience… I don’t maintain windows servers so it’s going to be a time sink for me… working on a windows machine means my tools that I use aren’t available or are different than normal workflow.. wsl is a huge step forward in that, but I still miss on a bunch of things… Java is just to price in the headaches of 10,000 line errors which eventually point back to bizarre Eden space issues at 3am. ;)

@Unabart @kilroy_was_here @dj3ei @croyle @ve3qbz I’ve been pondering dropping Ubuntu onto my old Mac minis as well.. I need a dvd ripping setup that I can set and forget and it seems like the perfect little candidate… someone was nice enough to hand me a crate of “for your consideration” dvd’s from the Oscar’s that’s dying to be added to my collection…

@PopeASDF @kilroy_was_here @dj3ei @croyle @ve3qbz I put Ubuntu on an old 2017 iMac and it ran like a champ except for one gigantic issue… no fan. So the thing got so scary hot that I gave up on it. I ran PopOS on a NUC for a couple years and enjoyed it but each time some weird error came out of nowhere that borked the entire setup. No idea if there was a hardware component causing it. Ubuntu has been a champ on everything, even my Pi5.

@PopeASDF @Unabart @kilroy_was_here @dj3ei @ve3qbz I'm not sure how we ended up on this topic, but everyone is different & has their preferences, which is fine & good... Personally, I really dislike Windows & Microsoft, & I prefer Apple products, which are also imperfect but I swear a whole lot less at them. 😂 I've used Windows & Macs & Unix daily throughout my career. I have all 3 at hand as I write this, as I have most of the time. I think it's natural to form a preference for one.

I don’t like paying the Apple price, but do prefer the ecosystem and OS. iPhone, iPad, etc. All-in. Ubuntu is definitely bridging the gap with Linux and MacOS a little more each release.

It’s been a gravy train for me, but I’ll be happy to spend the rest of my life on the southwest coast of Spain, fishing, napping, eating and playing dominoes at the beach. The whole computer landscape has changed so much since I ran a bbs in the 90s. It’s the ads, man. Over it. Marketing destroys another fun thing. I have a nice enough job to coast to retirement.
