@nyrath also the Ondes Martenot around the same time, especially in French movies. Le Roman d'un Tricheur (1936) is one of the earliest examples (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028201/)But not really a synthesizer in the usual definition of the word

@nyrath the Ondes had a bague (ring on a string) to alter pitch and a "touche" to control volume. Timbre and tone could be altered in various ways, including through the use of various "diffuseurs" (speakers / tone cabinets)
