For a certain kind of person Trump peddles a dream ... a dream of being able to say whatever you want without consequences. Famously, Trump doesn't take hits in popularity for anything he says. Everyone who might be upset is already disgusted with him, the remaining people are invested in the dream. Happily it seems it doesn't always apply to people in his orbit. This is what Vance is discovering. He's having a very traditional "gaffe sandpit" moment. Why does it work that way?

Part of Trump's gaffe armor is just accepting that a large portion of people will NEVER like you. Write them off. Moreover since they are "haters" it won't matter when they get angry. The other part is never ever ever backing down or admitting you are wrong. This isn't about grace it's just brute force. Last is to always repeat anything that you have been ding on to lessen its impact. They didn't like it? Say it again.Not everyone can pull this off.

I've always thought it ought to be possible to make Trump repeat really strange things by simply being critical of them...But then this started happening naturally. Like no one was "offended" by his shark story... just confused. But he repeated it too. His stump speech it totally determined by what he's be told he can't say. It's just a litany of things he's been told not to say.Kinda childish doesn't it? A kid trying to say every swear.

@futurebird I've often thought that a decent psychologist would be able to bring Trump down by identifying his weak points. Don't go for his authoritarianism: go for his vanity, his narcissism, his fear of betrayal. Keep nudging him back into that big ol' spiral.

@futurebird I distinctly remember being in a classroom in 1975 as a 11 year old boy screamed at someone "EAT MY PUSSYCOCK!" and even as a 12 yo boy on Long Island I thought it the stupidest insult ever.š¤¦š¼āāļø Trump has managed to top that level of absurd insult so out there, as you note, people think it's just confusing AF.š

@futurebird trump is the "strongman", who decides which journalists go to the bonesaw. vance is just a lackey; he doesn't decide. More, trump doesn't want any competition, so he's ok with vance being taken down a peg or three. That results in a functional (if not explicitly understood) "deal": they help trump out by not attacking him, and by keeping his competition (vance) down, and they keep their jobs and their lives.
