This is what happens when you use traceable cryptocurrencies like #Bitcoin. The only coin that keeps you safe by protecting your privacy is #Monero. https://mastodon.social/@ukrdef@mstdn.social/112870999401641416

@hyc the average person can't identify owners of wallets just by looking on chain, though. This guy must have been bragging about his crypto online or something.

@feld @hyc It's pretty easy. If you find out someone has bitcoin in real life just ask them if you can donate to them some Bitcoin, then you know how much they have.

@Sibshops @hyc *squints* no, I have 10,000 unique wallet addresses tied to one master seed. You never give out the master wallet address.https://bip85.com

I'm sure that's how investigators and cops find out if someone committed a crime too.👮 "Did you steal from this man?"🧟‍♂️ "No I did not"👮 "Righty-o, off you go then"

@feld @hyc Sure there are ways to make it harder, but you are more of the exception than the rule. I'm willing to bet less than 1% use more than 10 wallet address.

@Sibshops @hyc I'm willing to bet less than 1% are gonna be doing self custody so this point is moot anyway, they'll be receiving their btc on Cash App, Strike, or their favorite exchange.

@NonPlayableClown @feld @hyc I'm saying crypto makes it easier to see how much someone has. Criminals don't have any incentive to go after the poor. Of course cops will still use their typical methods to track down the criminal. Although it will be a lot harder for the police to get the stolen money back.

I mean if you plan on stealing from crypto, that's just foolhardy.Police has done mining operations to views wallet transactions. All they need to find a source wallet and they can go tracking from there.I always laughed when politicians claimed "laundering" when in reality it's much harder.
