I kind of find the "Black Women For Harris" ... "White Women for Harris" etc. a little ... odd. I'm not comfortable with it because it's a reminder of how salient race and gender remain in our politics. I'd rather pretend they aren't. But they are. I think this is why people say things like "Obama caused racism" it becomes less possible to ignore. But should we only have white men rule to avoid the discomfort and the growth? LOL heck no.

That "heck no it's not worth it" is the distinction between enabling ongoing racism and sexism and being willing to rub the crust from your eyes and sit down and deal with it. It is a little easier to do this if these forces have a way of coming for you personally I suppose.

@futurebird I agree with you completely. It's very tricky and weird philosophically.

I recently got drawn in to a bit of what I suspect to be a bad faith argument on here and found myself asking "Who do you want to deport en mass?" Because the only questions that matter are the direct ones in this kind of conversation. What *exactly* are you suggesting you want to do do? To who? This is why we still have to have these campy little groups. "See white women can support a black woman" ... "see? white men can too." The Basics.

For me the ultimate most basic question of all is:What kind of country is America? Are we a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-cultural country?Or are we a "Western* nation" or a "Christian nation" or a "Judeo-Christian nation" or a "Western* nation" ? (The bush we are beating around is White Christian Nationalism)If someone says they don't like "multiculturalism" ... OK so what is it that you do like then?*euphemisms galore!

@gws Yeah... up to a point. Like it can be fun to celebrate culture too. But the reality of being in any group that faces discrimination is you need to rally together and consolidate power with all the imperfections that can imply. And this same template can be used to demonstrate a widening tent.

@futurebird I find these camps rather annoying, repulsive, etc. But someone made a comment a few days ago: "None of us would vote for Candice Owens, and she's a black woman." In about 10 seconds, once I fully digested that, I realized "_____ for Harris", whatever the blank is, is not spreading racism, tribalism, or bringing racism back. It is just a group of people saying that they are a large voting block and you should bet on our horse. Identifying that block.

@futurebird I kind of agree also in that it emphasizes the problem and it puts whatever racial divisions exist, so much in the foreground. I wish there were a more indirect way to acknowledge the need but I’m not sure it’s possible. People really do unfortunately have to go out of our way to be explicit. It’s kind of the same reason I have to pause and wonder if a fringe white band that I like is secretly racist or not. It’s because it’s not said out loud.

@futurebird I’m not a fan of compartmentalization like this - I’m a strong believer that diversity is a strength, and we do better when we embrace differences. Okay, disclaimer aside - I can see how this might work on people who are already “compartmentalized” - it’s kind of a weird “representation matters” tactic. “Hey, I’m a white man, I’m like them, maybe I should vote for Kamala too…”Second disclaimer: I’m Canadian, so whiteness aside, I can’t vote for her. But I wish the best for the States, and hope that she can stop the downward spiral that the GOP is inflicting on the country.

@futurebird These groups/slogans ought not be needed, obviously. However, in order to reach that state, perhaps they are helpful in the short term, even if they also highlight (and maybe in some cases reinforce) the aspects we wish to eradicate. At the moment, getting Harris elected needs to take priority. The rest can wait until after the election.

@futurebird I'm not comfortable with it, either. And I'm torn about whether to join the White Dudes for Harris call tonight with Pete Buttigieg. Right now, I'm leaning towards "yes," just to help build momentum.

@futurebird It is, for me, a matter of reality v ideally.I grew up during the civil rights movement. I saw Oswald get shot on live TV. I read Look and Life magazines, and saw black and white images of Black people getting the shit kicked out of them. I followed body counts, saw color images of dead Vietnamese and dead Americans. I mourned the loss of Dr. King and RFK.

@futurebird "the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." (Treaty of Tripoli, ratified 1796)"it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." — Thomas Jefferson, "Notes on the State of Virginia”
