@aliss i also doubt majorly that every illegal copy is a lost salebecause generally people pirate because they either don’t have the money, find it too difficult to get a legitimate copy, or don’t care enough about the product to pay full price. most pirates still buy legitimate copies of the things they care about most and can easily get

@aliss Your point is spot on. I just wish they'd stop calling it "piracy" at all. It's "copyright infringement".They use "piracy" specifically because it implies a theft of physical goods, ala Captain Jack Sparrow.Digital goods != Physical goods. Duplication is not theft. It may or may not violate copyright. The nomenclature goes all the way back to "intellectual *property*".Physical property can be stolen. Ideas and digital representations can be copied.Big difference.

Jay was a derogatory term at the time, basically like saying a fucking-idiot walker.I feel like they tried to do the same thing with piracy, but jokes on them, pirates are super cool and entirely capture the i-just-want-to-be-free ideology.Piracy isn't theft, it's copyright infringement! Information wants to be free!

@aliss in German the wording was/is even harsher, it is called Raubkopie - copy by robbery And this even when no violence is involved ("Raub" is theft on threatening with violence)But copyright holders got away with almost anything (see Napster, torrents, ...) until AI.
