       Yesterday I noticed there was a spider living in the outworld of my Formica colony. It must have come with the bark. I’m going to leave it there, but the addition of the bark/spider has caused a response from the colony: they have decided to fortify the tube entrance to their nest with a sand barricade. I often get the eearie sense I am interacting with their intelligence and this is one of those moments. It’s the kind of neighborhood where you have bars on the windows I guess.

       They have lived here for weeks and only after I added the bark (and spider) have they felt like they needed to block this entrance so only ants can fit, and so it is more easy to defend.

       The ants in this colony can, and probably will eat the spider eventually. Frankly, I'm happy to see signs they are settling into their nest and shaping it to their needs. This colony has been acting a little strange since I upgraded their space a month ago.

       @Tattie It is pretty insulting to the spider. That's a cobweb making spider. It's not going to go around breaking into ant nests and stealing pupae. But, the ants are Not Amused and have decided they need to Take Measures.

       @futurebird literally turned their nest into a gated community because one spider moved in next door

       @hypolite @Tattie Ant HOAs are a trip (Hole Owner Association) this is why when I almost got canceled on tumblr for "doing hostile urban architect on ants" (because I put a fan on their tubes to keep them from loitering) I didn't have much sympathy for all the criticism.

       @futurebird The Life of a Spider: Struggle and Tragedy(in case it's not clear: although the spider may claim a few stray ants, there's no way it comes out on top here.)

       @futurebird this is a fascinating 🐜 response! πŸ‘€ so the spider is locked out; wonder how long the respones actually takes, once one 🐜 sees the threat so they must have some smell for that, and mark the spot where a barrier should be build? or how is this communicated.. :breadthink: :ant: :ant: :ant:

       I love reading about your ant colony.But spiders? Spiders are the single most wonderful and amazing contribution to life itself in my garden. If I go outside at night with a flashlight and shine it into the grass just right, I can see countless sweet tiny green and pink jewel-like reflections of countless spider eyes selflessly keeping the garden free of pests night and day.I don't know if I can bear to learn your ants ate the spider,@futurebird. Oh, the arachnity . . . !

       this is hilarious and sad at the same time πŸ˜„ 😳 meanwhile the ants figured this is fun, naming it hyper tube, and stand in line for a wild ride πŸ˜‚          🐜 🐜 🐜  <=                🐜   🐜  lets go!____🌬️  🐜                                           🐜 again! ____               =>  🐜  whee! _____________________________🐜___ @apophis @Tattie @hypolite @futurebird
