They had the signs printed in advanced. Hired a graphic designer. (Wow he did a good job.) Handed them out. Waved them proudly on television. Like they say "Lower Taxes" or something. There is no neutral way to read this sign. It's about getting rid of people because of who they are. There is no gray area. No fig leaf. Just eliminationism. It doesn't even say WHO or WHY.

@futurebird this is accurate though. If they have the chance to operationalize this, they will absolutely detain, hold in camps and deport US citizens. These might be “mistakes” but I expect the program to be intentionally indiscriminate and that citizens who are deported will be blamed by those responsible.

@futurebird Trump made specific references (although not by name) to Operation Wetback.... My grandparents fled the city of Los Angels with their kids to a then rural area well outside of the city to avoid it as brown people were being picked up off the street and put on trains to Mexico. (This despite both my grandparents being born in texas (where my ancestors lived for at least 200 years before the Mexican American war.))

@webbj Do people not understand just how many families will be totally destroyed by this? Torn apart? Whole communities would be ruined. Many of the people don't even speak the language of the nation they may have been born in and know nothing about it. And if that isn't "moving" enough it will also ruin the economy. The message wasn’t “support this policy.” It was: “you have an official patriotic duty to shed moral qualms and personally commit violence.”

@impermanen_ The veneer of professionalism and polish is very upsetting to me. They have said this stuff before, muttered it, dog whistled, but now it's in print and official. That's a little too close to it being official government policy. To it having the force of state sanctioned violence fully deployed behind it. The permission structure is already there. The excuses.
