I'm disappointed that after the 8086 (or maybe the 80286?) Intel stopped making DIP versions of their processors.I want a core i9 in DIP form, damn it.

Based on standard dip pitch I think it would be about two meters/7 feet wide.

@foone https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_80286 talks about 68 and 100 pin packages. That might be a little too much for DIP.

@foone Intel stopped using numbers to designate CPUs because they couldn't be trademarked, starting with the Pentium. What do you think the number designation might be for the Core i9 if they were still doing that?

@foone Hm. We might have to move to 0.05” pin spacing.

@foone Or just start multiplexing all the pins with an 11 bit selector…

@foone We could probably multiplex a lot of the pins and we could give it an 8-bit data bus, for example.

@rk @foone maybe we could just make a bunch of different interconnected dips. a general data processor. an interface processor. an attached processor to bring back real mode. we could call it the i9-4320k

@foone the 68000 is pretty massive already... And I only just recently learned the whole reason it was 16/32 bit was because a full 32 bit implementation exceeded the max number of pins they could build in a DIP.

@foone You could shorten that a lot by simply putting one of these on the top of the chip for getting the power into it:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_60309

@foone 2.15m long if we're using 2.54mm spacing, which I looked up as JDEC standard for DIP pins, for a DIP-style i9-14000. The i9 14th gen uses LGA 1700, which apparently has 1700 connector pins on it. Go figure. The math does itself after that. This does not take into consideration alternate layouts for the CPU transistors or anything like that.I really expected it to be much, much longer. This is almost do-able. Next step: design the heat-sink for that beast.

@foone Reminds me that AMD sticked to pins for their CPUs for quite a while (not sure if they even stopped), while Intel instead effectively moved those to the motherboard side.

@foone That's reminding me of that monster 64-pin DIP processors of the 80s like the MC68000 and the TMS9900Given the pin density, why not make it something even more cursed like QIP?

@fooneWell, now my headcannon is that the Star Wars Imperial Navy use chips like this, which is why their ships are all so huge. Four guys and a droid in special black helmets, levering a huge smoking slab out of its socket in a firefight.
