Well, the Democrats decided to FA, and I guess we're all going to FO, aren’t we?

I sure hope this doesn't turn out to be the greatest own goal in history. The historical record is not reassuring on that.

As AOC pointed out, the people behind this don't have any kind of game plan. They don't want Harris, either, so they're going to push her out. As AOC also pointed out, the fascists are going to litigate the hell out of any attempts to get a new ticket on the ballot in swing states. SCOTUS will decide those cases.

I’m sure Democratic voters are going to be thrilled to get a presidential nominee they had absolutely no voice in choosing.

@dgoldsmith That's why it made me a little sad. I don't think we'd be seeing this call unless he's really not doing that well at all. Biden also has all this information. The president isn't well. Let's not lose sight of that in all of this.

@futurebird @dgoldsmith I think its more that he realised that, when half your own side's senators and financial backers are actively briefing against you, you are not going to get in.I don't think they want Harris either so I think the Dems are basically moving into clown car territory now.

@futurebird the first thing my partner said when she heard the news was “is he dying?” I know he has Covid, he genuinely might not be doing well.

@futurebird @dgoldsmithYes. I wonder about COVID brain fog.... and that for other folks, the new COVID lasts longer and is more severe tho' that might just be for regular people, not people with good health care.

@Tallish_Tom @dgoldsmith The Donors who wanted someone else needed both Biden and Harris to endorse that person. Otherwise they are just breaking things. Even then... that would have been a hard sell. Ain't nobody vote for their Mr. Whoever.

@futurebird @dgoldsmith Ecch... I'm still processing this and God help me, money talks and money won this argument.I do not like this, not at all. I feel, as a Democrat and a Biden donor, the 1%-ers have fucked us over. Upon reflection, nobody's had a good second term as POTUS, ever. Maybe Biden's just had enough of it - my wife told me, when I retired - "You've worked enough."Biden certainly has.

@futurebird I think he's making this call because there was a successful effort to undermine his candidacy. I honestly don’t know how he feels, but I don't see illness as the only or even the most likely reason.

@dgoldsmith We might not have been told. Or they might not have picked up on it. It can get deep into the system ... so much we don't know and aren't paying enough attention to on that on. Anyway I hope I'm wrong. But I can't help but notice how it lines up with his symptoms. Not so sick he's out cold... just... dragging.

@fivetonsflax @dgoldsmith Like we don't really know. Some people are saying this is purely political and Biden was "forced out by media and party meanies" Which gives Biden very little credit. Dude loves being president. I thought he was going to stay to the bitter end. He gets COVID (again) and that seems like the tipping point (and doing it before the convention, which is just good manners)I have more respect for anyone with power who can give it up. It is so very rare.

@futurebird @fivetonsflax @dgoldsmith Joe Biden is 81, has had COVID twice, and also had a brain aneurysm (a long time ago now and he did recover well then, but it still happened). That is quite enough for anyone to decide they cannot do the job of POTUS.Just like Bernie Sanders decided he could not run for POTUS again after he had a heart attack; and Paul Wellstone did not run in 2000 because his MS meant he could not do the job.

@futurebird @fivetonsflax @dgoldsmith The ultimate irony is this is a reminder of the proof of why he was always a better candidate than Trump even if you considered all other things equal. It's not 100%, but he does listen to other people. Even when the other people are wrong (I didn't want to see him as the nominee, but once the die was cast, to leave at this late stage is now too late. Those insisting he leave now were being disingenuous and this will cause chaos.)

@nazokiyoubinbou @fivetonsflax @dgoldsmith He could have stayed though. If he really wanted to he could have. But I think he realized he'd need to reduce his events, do less for his health. So he made a call. In politics there are always self-interested voices calling for all kinds of things, some are gloating right now and that isn't impressing me at all.

@futurebird @nazokiyoubinbou @fivetonsflax @dgoldsmith Realistically, we'll never know, unless they release medical records.I'm inclined to assume it's true that he has Covid. But I've also had the thought that this is a convenient cover story to give Biden some dignity in bowing out after he publicly declared that it would take a medical crisis, or God almighty coming down, for him to bow out.

@futurebird @fivetonsflax @dgoldsmith To be honest, what I had really hoped would happen (given health stuff and etc) was for him to continue running (since it was already too late to step down now) and then step down later on, letting Harris take over at that point. *After* the vote.
