@futurebird Given the impact 8.1 billion humans are having on our ecosystem, I don't feel that more people is a good thing. Since rich countries are having by far the most impact, it seems to me we should be leading the way in slowly shrinking the population.I would never want to stop people who want kids from having them, but I don't think we need to *encourage* (or worse, force) people to have kids.

@futurebird "the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion." (Treaty of Tripoli, ratified 1796)"it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." — Thomas Jefferson, "Notes on the State of Virginia”

If, despite your best efforts, friends wind up going to Bluesky or Threads instead of the Fediverse, encourage them to enable federation so you can still interact with them from here.Bluesky: Instructions here: https://fed.brid.gy/docs#bluesky-get-started (TL;DR: follow @ap.brid.gy on Bluesky).Threads: Turn on "Fediverse sharing" in your account.#Federation

@futurebird The pressure differential between inside and outside is much higher in the deep ocean than in space (many atmospheres vs. one or less). The most worrisome parts of space travel for me are launch and reentry. I'm not too worried about the travel itself — the trajectories are planned out meticulously.

@futurebird I went to high school not far from there! Those particular shops weren’t there back then though (1970-1974).

My scorecard so far in getting folks on Bluesky I want to follow to turn on the ActivityPub bridge: 2 did so, 9 didn't respond or I couldn’t find a way to contact them.I really wish this bridge acted like "request follow" rather than requiring an explicit opt in. The bridge could ask someone on either side whether they want to accept/reject a single person at a time, open up follows completely, or opt out of bridging altogether and not be asked again.@snarfed.org

I am still seeing tons of articles in the mainstream media about how Democrats need to win back disaffected Trump voters. This is despite the data which clearly shows that Trump's vote did not increate significantly over 2020, but rather that Democratic voters voted in substantially smaller numbers.I see no articles about how Democrats need to energize their base to vote, which is what the data indicates. The mainstream narrative is pure bullshit.

I should point out that the number one way mainstream journalists say Democrats should win back disaffected Trump voters is by abandoning progressive values.

@futurebird No liquid core layer means no magnetosphere, which I believe means more problems with radiation. I seem to recall that leading to more rapid loss of atmosphere.

@futurebird The universe is very, very, very, very, very, (inhales) very large. There are ~2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe, with an estimated 10²⁵ planets orbiting stars and 10-10000 times more sunless planets. There are very likely more planets with (at least microbial) life than there are grains of sand on Earth (~10¹⁸). And the weirdest thing in the universe doesn't have to be alive. It's statistically hugely unlikely that the weirdest thing in the universe is on Earth.

@drahardja The social media site whose architecture inherently requires the resources of a billionaire to run and is largely financed by cryptobros is “billionaire-proof.” Riiiiight.
