We think of right angles as a sign of human design, but Paramatachia spiders like to use them in their webs. I wonder if these spiders have considered writing MIDI tunes?https://tywkiwdbi.blogspot.com/2021/06/interesting-spiderweb-pattern.html

@futurebird Someone once wrote that everything can be explained by wave theory, and this looks like a square wave. It is true it takes more energy to make sharp cornered turns, but overall a square wave represents a 50% duty cycle that may be less taxing on the spider. So maybe a smarter spider than the rest.

@futurebird I think this spider is trying to tell us something.Specifically, I think this spider is trying to tell us that Whitcomb L. Judson did not invent the zipper. He just nicked it off the spiders.

@futurebird perfect money-making idea here: 1. repeat, with these spiders, the experiment that gave spiders different drugs and recorded how the spider then made a web2. determine how each drug precisely affected these square waves3. make a synthesizer with knobs that introduce these changes4. give a few models out to youtubers who will enjoy saying "now let's hear that again, with higher cocaine"

@futurebird Lots of interesting stuff here. Right angles are generally rare for several physical and chemical reasons - high stress joints, inefficient use of materials, etc. Isolation to Australia/New Zealand, Tasmania suggests lack of evolutionary pressure from more conventional web weavers but without more data it's just idle speculation.I think they're from the Northern Hemisphere dealing badly sun direction and the Coriolis effect. They look north and spin right but the earth spins left.
