I will not hate liberals for being doufy and for having "Notorious RBG" buttons on their bags.I will not hate angry little radicals for pointing out my parasocial attachment to one of the six likable politicians left.I will not even hate the reluctant conservative would would probably argue with all of us about something innocuous like raising the social security cap.Everyone willing to help keep us from that darkest path is welcome. The authoritarian movement needs to be totally rejected.

I tend to think of people as more left wing than me as the people who are right about everything, but not practical enough about how exactly they will get anything done. People slightly to the right of me are those I tend to think of as being "insufficiently alarmed" they are underestimating the depth of the problem. Trusting too much in existing power structures to protect them. This is probably pretty typical.

Think of the people holding those "Mass Deportation Now! (2024)" signs and then think of:* The most annoying "blueMAGA" liberal you have ever encountered* The scruffiest least realistic leftist you have ever encounteredWouldn't you rather work with them instead of one of the people with those signs? Who would you rather work with in the aftermath of a disaster? Who is more likely to have your back?

@futurebird The person with the sign might try and have my back, because I'm a big white man, until they realize I'm Italian. After a disaster, while working with me the MAGA person might make a choice, causing me to make a choice, leading them to never be seen again. The leftist might be useless, but I can tune them out and try to get something done (I'd fail in most fields, especially after a disaster).

@futurebird I’ve been challenged lately to remember the humanity of those I vehemently disagree with. We all make decisions according to our biases and the information we’ve been presented with. Nobody sees themself as a villain. It’s easy to get swept up in the same kind of binary tribalism as we see in the other side, especially online where our shared humanity is most muted. I’m guilty of this. You can’t change a mind with shame and accusations. Only with vulnerability, curiosity and empathy.

@futurebirdThe funny thing is you never really can know for sure about the people with the signs. Some of them honestly don't hear the dog whistles. They believe the "those people are dangerous" rhetoric even when they're friends with some of "those people" because "Well I don't think of you as one of those people!" because their friends obviously aren't dangerous.People can hold biases for a group and not even know it because they can give known individuals the benefit of the doubt.

@cshlan I don't know where to start with someone who thinks "masses" of people need to be "deported" out of sight and out of mind. That's not taking issues with the "problems" caused by people it's just rejecting the people themselves. Indiscriminately, en mass.

@futurebirdIt is but there are some people who honestly believe that there could be that many "criminals and terrorists" who have been sent here. These are usually people living somewhere where there isn't a sizable number of immigrants. It's like how they can belive there are whole swaths of European countries ruled by Sharia law. They have no personal context and believe what they're told. But one on one they'd be perfectly helpful. And then they'd be *shocked* to see that person deported.

@futurebird This is kind of a #GeorgeCarlin perspective: “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”

@skip_lacaze Yes. Exactly. So it's silly to be mad that the people who are likely most closely aligned with you. Even though it's disgusting how they haven't picked the perfect position as I have. :/
