I've sort of really gotten in to writing image descriptions. With art it lets me focus on what it is that l like about a work, to try to somewhat objectively convey that in a succinct manner. The kind of challenge that tickles my brain. With other images it forces me to focus on exactly what the issue is. To lay it out.No image description is really objective of course. But there is a distancing that occurs when you describe an image. I think it's useful.

@futurebird And the original one of the signs just said “typical of the RNC” which was not descriptive enough.

@futurebird With alt-text it's a fun challenge to be concise, evocative and honest. I feel it's a little like composing a haiku. And when you describe an image, you actually see it better. It forces you to search for detail, consider composition and colour, and mood.Alt-text enriches everyone's experience.

@BrettCoulstock "Alt-text enriches everyone's experience."Exactly! I get so much out of it. Like I didn't notice that the MSNBC image mentioned Project 2024 until I started breaking it down.

I love this! Do you have the curiosity to try audio description for a movie or TV show? HAHA! But this is fascinating to me! You aren't the first sighted person to say they never really *saw* images before, that they just kind of looked at them. @futurebird

@futurebird I also enjoy it and enjoy reading other people's descriptions, it adds another layer to an image or post.

@weirdwriter Since my nephew is blind I've gotten used to describing what's going on in shows when watching them with him, it's nicer than that pre-done descriptions since I know roughly what's too small or fast for him to see and can be minimal about it. "she's picking the lock" ... "he saw the photo of the same woman from before in the desk drawer"It also makes the movie more enjoyable IMO.

@futurebird Thank you for that, really. We, blind users, have no other methods of knowing what's on the image. And if you keep describing them, we are getting a more colorful timeline which is good to read! It would be even more awesome if more and more people did so. :)

@futurebird I used to read biology and medical textbooks for an organization then called Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. I've described some *complicated* images.

@stevegis_ssg I've been considering having my students do image descriptions for graphs as a part of the statistics unit. Like... people don't really look at graphs. What are the axis? What is the scale? What kind of trend is that?Making it an image description feels like a better motivated assignment than just quizzing them with these questions... and they need to choose what maters about the graph.

@stevegis_ssg I could also see how having a diagram described by someone who understands a subject deeply would make it make more sense. I wish I could have the authors of some papers on ants I've read really describe their figs. for me. More than just "lateral view" or whatever.

@stevegis_ssg Also a really good description should go from the big main idea ... to more detail in a way where people can sort of stop reading when they get enough.

@weirdwriter @futurebird There’s an episode of Twenty Thousand Hertz all about those content descriptions and it is fascinating. The episode talks about what goes into the work and also touches on the effort to get Hollywood to do more of it. https://overcast.fm/+MLcZFPMS0

@futurebird Oh, I hope so.I have literally described the bones of the skull, reading an anatomy textbook for blind medical students. I cannot imagine that my descriptions were helpful, yet our studio manager said he met blind doctors at headquarters who learned their anatomy from our recordings. So ?????

@futurebird @stevegis_ssg I honestly like that aspect of alt text.I have to tell people what I wanted them to see. What's the point of including that graph? It really helps people understand. I like that a lot. It's really not limited to sight impairments.

@futurebird same, I’ve found it an interesting exercise, and it’s informed how I’m thinking about accessibility at work
