@futurebird @LinuxNerd They are generally very good, but they do present a distinct learning pathway, rather than a "dip into the book and look stuff up" model.Kathy Sierra who designed the series had a great blog about her process and considering how to present informational material back in the day, but someone made threats against her and she pulled the plug. 😠 Still worth reading.https://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/

@futurebird We get our milk from an actual diary up the road. They are not allowed to sell it to us because of Stupid Rules, but they're a lovely family and sell it to us anyway, and we pay well above the meagre pittance it's sold for at the supermarket. And it tastes *fantastic*Some of the family work off-farm, because a family farm can't support an actual family anymore. 😠

@futurebird If you have a dream, and you work hard, you can make it come true! You just need an atmosphere with a greater O2 concentration and an ambitious breeding programme.

@futurebird It's basically Ocean's 11 in a Blade Runner World with some Tron stuff going on as well. He basically wrote a cool heist movie.Seconding Pattern Recognition though. I do like a post-modern detective story.

I don't see enough discussion of the the craft of #AudioDescription Here's a short examination of a brilliant audio introduction from the Leeds Playhouse last year for a production of Lord of the Flies. https://vividlanguage.bearblog.dev/audio-introduction-lord-of-the-flies/ And the intro itself can be heard here. It's 6 minutes, and well worth your time.https://soundcloud.com/leedsplayhouse/lord-of-the-flies-audio-description-introduction-notes

Every couple of years my treacherous magpie brain says use #DocBook (which of course implies a whole toolchain and writing XSLT and using Java).I think it's because while I write in #HTML I crave more expressiveness. Equally, I loathe #microformats, they feel like some semantic alien infection creeping through your writing. They're *awkward*.But I've been reading you can create your own custom HTML tags.https://matthewjamestaylor.com/custom-tagsI'm deeply curious.

@futurebird I'm not an ant-fiend, and I'd have that on my wall just because it is simply beautiful. I can see exactly why you'd covet it.There's something evocative and special about those kinds of scientific and nature illustrations, whether it's plant, fungi or animal. Old maps are also adjacent in this space. It's the human element, the mastery of the medium, the delicate colouring, the spidery hand-writing.Art.

Sometimes you come across a #podcast episode that makes you nod, and cheer and laugh.https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/bigideas/politics-richard-dennis-yanis-varoufakis-keneally-joelle-gergis/103669338This is the #BigIdeas podcast from the #ABC and it's a beautiful discussion of the decoding of business vernacular, political spin and financial jargon, and how meaningless and silly it is.If you love the English language, and hate the way debate is framed in the media by people who solemnly make pronouncements that seem reasonable in jargon, this is essential listening.

I don't see enough discussion of the craft of #AudioDescription. But the conversations that do happen are not on X or LinkedIn or the ADP List (or, alas! Mastodon).Overwhelmingly, these discussions happen on podcasts. Here's a monthly roundup of audio description and related podcasts, starting with a look back at April.https://vividlanguage.bearblog.dev/audio-description-podcasts-april-2024/Going to try to make this a regular thing.

@futurebird @JamesAshburnerCBR Bull-ants can't climb smooth surfaces, but what they can do surprisingly well is jump. And they can *see* you all the way up there ...

@futurebird Looks like a real photo to me. A casual image search suggests it might be a water-louse.Funny thing AI generated photos often make me feel slighly nauseous, and I'm not sure why. This image looks and feels authentic.

@futurebird With alt-text it's a fun challenge to be concise, evocative and honest. I feel it's a little like composing a haiku. And when you describe an image, you actually see it better. It forces you to search for detail, consider composition and colour, and mood.Alt-text enriches everyone's experience.

@futurebird I saw The Church last year touring Hypnogogue and they were superb. That's really a whole sci-fi concept album. Kilby is a really funny bloke on stage too.

@futurebird I remember hearing this word on a song on the *Swordfish* soundtrack, probably about 2000? Not a new word.

@futurebird I believe when you have an injured bird like this, they should be prone, not supine, and covering them with a towel helps as the darkness can reduce stress for them, and if it's cold, keep them warm.Sad when it happens though.:-(

@futurebird I have seen plenty of bull-ants, and have the usual aversion of someone who has been stung by a couple. I encounter them regularly on walking tracks and make a point of giving them a wide birth (those things make belligerent eye contact, as if to say 'you think you're tough? Do you? Huh? Do you?')I've never seen one stumbling back at dawn. But then, I'm seldom awake that early.
